Cassis Wine

Cassis (not to be confused with the blackcurrant liqueur of the same name) is a town and wine region on the coast of Provence in southern France. The vineyards are located along the sunny coast with cooling sea breezes and protected from mistral winds by rugged cliffs, much like neighboring Bandol. One of these happens to be one of the tallest in France, called La Grande Tete (big head).

AOC Cassis, established in 1936, covers whites, reds and rosés. The whites tend to be full-bodied and bit herbaceous. Ugni Blanc is the principal white grape, followed by Marsanne, Clairette, Bourboulenc (Doucillon Blanc), Pascal, Sauvignon Blanc, and Terret Blanc. Reds consist mainly of Grenache, Cinsault and Mourvèdre, which also find their way into rosés.

Sadly, to drink wines from Cassis (and possibly the reason why many outside France only know the liqueur), one has to be in Provence. Hopefully more of these character-driven wines find their way onto international shelves Read more »
