Vouvray Wine


Vouvray

Vouvray is an appellation created in 1936,although there has been viticulture here for centuries for white wine from 8 communes around the village of that name in the Touraine region of the Loire Valley. The grape variety used is chenin blanc or pineau de Loire as it is known in this area. Vouvray can be dry (usually labeled “sec”), demi-sec, sweet, or sparkling. In cooler years, most wines made are dry, off-dry, or sparkling; in the best years, the top producers come out with what Vouvray is really known for -- the exceptional, long-lived Moelleux or Liquoreux wines. Demi-Sec Vouvray can also be excellent and ageworthy. One reason the wines often benefit from a great deal of time in bottle is the extremely high natural acidity of the Chenin Blanc grape.
