Vouvray Wine

Vouvray is a large, varied appellation in the Touraine region of the Loire Valley. The grape variety used is Chenin Blanc. Vouvray can be dry (usually labeled “sec”), demi-sec, sweet, or sparkling. In cooler years, most wines made are dry, off-dry, or sparkling; in the best years, the top producers come out with what Vouvray is really known for -- the exceptional, long-lived Moelleux or Liquoreux wines. Demi-Sec Vouvray can also be excellent and ageworthy. One reason the wines often benefit from a great deal of time in bottle is the extremely high natural acidity of the Chenin Blanc grape. Some of the top producers include Huet, Champalou, and Pinon. Their wines are up there with the best white wines in the world, and are very different from commercial Vouvray, which is usually a simple, off-dry white wine that does not benefit from time in bottle.

awesome. had it at terroir wine bar in SF last night. let's see how much i can recall -- gorgeous, complex nose of lemon-lime citrus, green apple, mineral, and floral notes; a light, yet compelling palate highlighted by searing, but not overpowering and well integrated acidity that carries through for a long, elegant finish. -- the best chenin... • Didier Champalou Vouvray 2007

On the dry side of Vouvray, this is a pleasant, refreshing drink with green appley flavours and a sherbet zing on the end. It's a simple, unpretentious wine, and for that, a bit pricey.(Edit: This opened up a bit after an hour or two -- the sherbety acid gave way a bit, revealing some nice caraway notes. Worth the money, then.) Read More

  • Champalou Vouvray le Clos du Portail 2005

This dry Vourvray (Chenin Blanc) from Champalou is quite consistently delicious, but the 2005 is a step above that. It's not a wine that knocks you over the head--but give it a few minutes and it will win you over with it's ripe pear fruit, excellent acid-balance and a remarkably graceful texture. Easy to drink by itself, a real crowd-pleaser, a... Read More
