Vouvray Wine

Vouvray

Vouvray is a large, varied appellation in the Touraine region of the Loire Valley. The grape variety used is Chenin Blanc. Vouvray can be dry (usually labeled “sec”), demi-sec, sweet, or sparkling. In cooler years, most wines made are dry, off-dry, or sparkling; in the best years, the top producers come out with what Vouvray is really known for -- the exceptional, long-lived Moelleux or Liquoreux wines. Demi-Sec Vouvray can also be excellent and ageworthy. One reason the wines often benefit from a great deal of time in bottle is the extremely high natural acidity of the Chenin Blanc grape. Some of the top producers include Huet, Champalou, and Pinon. Their wines are up there with the best white wines in the world, and are very different from commercial Vouvray, which is usually a simple, off-dry white wine that does not benefit from time in bottle.

Vouvray on Snooth

  • So dmcker, that might be a good one for another thread:  What goes best ... white Burgundy or a aged dry Vouvray maybe. Recently been thinking a lot about paella, cassoulet, bollito misto, osso buco, and other kinds of foods that we think of as special and labor intensive, but were vernacular dishes that made use of what was on hand, and the f... • Huet Vouvray le Haut-Lieu Sec 2011

    Snoothrank:

Very interesting somewhat woody nose, but with some peach/melon scents. On the tongue I can, again, get peach or cantaloupe flavors. Good acid structurewhile there is some tartness, it is not enough to chase away anybody who is tart aversemakes it quite refreshing. Maybe Im showing my inexperience, but, if I did not know bettere.g., I had not... Read More

The Domaine de Vodanis is situated in the commune of Rochecorbon and is cultivated by SA Huet along biodynamic lines (only natural substances used in the vineyard, no chemicals or pesticides) The wines are vinified by Noel Pinguet.
