Vouvray Wine

Vouvray

Vouvray is a large, varied appellation in the Touraine region of the Loire Valley. The grape variety used is Chenin Blanc. Vouvray can be dry (usually labeled “sec”), demi-sec, sweet, or sparkling. In cooler years, most wines made are dry, off-dry, or sparkling; in the best years, the top producers come out with what Vouvray is really known for -- the exceptional, long-lived Moelleux or Liquoreux wines. Demi-Sec Vouvray can also be excellent and ageworthy. One reason the wines often benefit from a great deal of time in bottle is the extremely high natural acidity of the Chenin Blanc grape. Some of the top producers include Huet, Champalou, and Pinon. Their wines are up there with the best white wines in the world, and are very different from commercial Vouvray, which is usually a simple, off-dry white wine that does not benefit from time in bottle.
