Vouvray Wine

Vouvray

Vouvray is a large, varied appellation in the Touraine region of the Loire Valley. The grape variety used is Chenin Blanc. Vouvray can be dry (usually labeled “sec”), demi-sec, sweet, or sparkling. In cooler years, most wines made are dry, off-dry, or sparkling; in the best years, the top producers come out with what Vouvray is really known for -- the exceptional, long-lived Moelleux or Liquoreux wines. Demi-Sec Vouvray can also be excellent and ageworthy. One reason the wines often benefit from a great deal of time in bottle is the extremely high natural acidity of the Chenin Blanc grape. Some of the top producers include Huet, Champalou, and Pinon. Their wines are up there with the best white wines in the world, and are very different from commercial Vouvray, which is usually a simple, off-dry white wine that does not benefit from time in bottle.

  • Here is my best way of explaining it, Preetish.Wines taste "Sweet" if ... if ... wine labeled "Vouvray" will probably have a little bit of detectable sweetness.  A wine labeled "Sancerre," or "Pouilly Fume," or "Muscadet" will be dry.Wines from the U.S. can be all over the place.  As I indicated, if you see the words "Late Harvest" on the labe... • Baron Bernard Selection Vouvray Domaine de Vaufuget 2011

    Snoothrank:

Slightly off dry (it reminded me of riesling), this is a well balanced chenin blanc with lots of acid and notes of green apple and honey with a touch of lime and some slightly salty minerality. Good length with a dry finish. (Proved to be a versatile cheese wine - the sweetness bounced well off both blue cheese and parmesan) Read More

  • So here's an idea, but you kind of have to jump in feet first:  ... ... Introduce the Mrs to either Vouvray wines in the demi-sec or sweet range.  If she likes the flavors, you can move to drier chenin blanc.  But chenin can be tough--it's really high in acid.  So, instead, try her on some spatlese or auslese rieslings in the sweeter range.  T... The Domaine de Vodanis is situated in the commune of Rochecorbon and is cultivated by SA Huet along biodynamic lines (only natural substances used in the vineyard, no chemicals or pesticides) The wines are vinified by Noel Pinguet. For a wine with 9 years of age it was tasting as fresh ...
