Chinon Wine

Chinon is the most important red-wine appellation in the Touraine part of the Loire Valley. Together with Bourgueil, it is the part of the world where Cabernet Franc achieves its best expression. The wines range from bright, fresh, and fruity to serious and long-lived, and they never, ever cost as much as they should. The truly smart wine buyer should seek out the wines of top producers such as Olga Ruffault, Charles Joguet, and Bernard Baudry and cellar them.

A small amount of dry rose is made, as well as some white wine from Chenin Blanc. When made by the region’s top producers, both can be outstanding.

The 2011 Les Chanteaux Chinon white is a very nice example of Chenin blanc that has a bit of maturity. The color, aroma, flavir and texture are rich, velvety and honeyed. No himts of oxidation, which arer so common in Chenin that is not fresh.Ansolutely delicious, satisfying wine, and a very fine example of dry Loire Chenin lanc. Read More

  • JD, LIOCO's been on the radar for a while, well before I went walkabout. ... got a final answer on the Chinon and Bourgeouil sourcing in Tokyo conundrum; even Chinon has almost disappeared from the marketplace completely, forget about the other. 10 to 20 years  ago I could throw a frisbee in any direction and wing off several bottles of them. ... • Hi all,Just a quickie... had family emergency stuff this weekend.THe Gridley ... ... earthiness from the Chinon of course, a bit brighter, and some additional tobacco and spiciness.  That is the short list...  We ended up leaving early the next day, so my focus left me.  Anyhoo, different than the Chinon, but I have to say the Gridley won, as... • Domaine Bernard Baudry Chinon les Granges 2010

Lots of fresh herbaceous blackberry on the nose here, coupled with refreshing hints of menthol and cough drop. My better half and I both though the nose was a bit like a dolcetto. On the palate it was slightly less complex. Lots of plush, soft tannin and a delicate balance of flavors. The body was a defining characteristic of this wine - very mo... Read More

  • Lots of people who drink sherry in Tokyo. And a hell of a lot easier to find good sherry than good Loire red.  Two more shops, two more strikes (five so far, hope I get a hit before the inning ends). Smatterings of whites and roses, no Loire CF to save my life. I could've found more 20 years ago, far more easily, than in 2014. Says something abo... Read More
