Chinon Wine

Chinon

Chinon is an appellation created in 1937,although there has been viticulture here since at least the Romans, from an area of 26 communes on both sides of the river Vienne around the small town of that name. This town  is located by the confluence of the river Loire and its tributary the Vienne and is famous as Joan of Arc met the King of France in its castle. It is the most important red-wine appellation in the Touraine part of the Loire Valley. Together with Bourgueil, it is the part of the world where Cabernet Franc, called 'petit breton' in these parts. achieves its best expression. The wines range from bright, fresh, and fruity to serious and long-lived, and they never, ever cost as much as they should. The truly smart wine buyer should seek out the wines of top producers such as Olga Ruffault, Charles Joguet, and Bernard Baudry and cellar them.

A small amount of dry rose is made, as well as some white wine from Chenin Blanc. When made by the region’s top producers, both Read more »

  • Bernard Baudry Chinon les Granges 2017

    Snoothrank:

This youthful drinking version of M. Baudry is a delicious, light to medium Cabernet Franc with excellent colour (robe), a scent of celery, carrot top, wild grass and a hint of ripe cherry. On the palate, you get a little vanilla, gobs of fresh, ripe cherry and a light to medium density and medium finish. This is an excellent, northern climate... Read More

  • Le Grand Bougueteau Chinon Cabernet Franc Loire Valley Chinon 2012

    Snoothrank:

Old world in style even though it seems to be a ripe vintage. Ripe fruit and a touch of menthol on the nose. Red fruited in the mouth with some sharp acidity and a bit of biting tannin on the finish. I know, baby killer. Read More
