Description 1 of 1
Touraine is the large, central section of the Loire Valley, around the city of Tours. It contains some of the Loire’s most important appellations, such as Chinon, Bougueil, St-Nicolas-de-Bourgueil, Vouvray, and Montlouis, as well as dozens of grape varieties. It is extremely geologically diverse as well, incorporating clay, sand, tuffeau, and gravel soils. The generic appellation of Touraine Blanc can be a blend of Chenin Blanc, Arbois, Sauvignon Blanc, and Chardonnay, while Touraine Rouge can be any combination of Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cot, Gamay, Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier, Pinot Gris, Pineau d’Aunis, and Grolleau, which makes for some fun and interesting wines. The same grape varieties can also find their way into rose and sparkling wines.
