Touraine is the large, central section of the Loire Valley, around the city of Tours. It contains some of the Loire’s most important appellations, such as Chinon, Bougueil, St-Nicolas-de-Bourgueil, Vouvray, and Montlouis, as well as dozens of grape varieties. It is extremely geologically diverse as well, incorporating clay, sand, tuffeau, and gravel soils. The generic appellation of Touraine Blanc can be a blend of Chenin Blanc, Arbois, Sauvignon Blanc, and Chardonnay, while Touraine Rouge can be any combination of Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cot, Gamay, Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier, Pinot Gris, Pineau d’Aunis, and Grolleau, which makes for some fun and interesting wines. The same grape varieties can also find their way into rose and sparkling wines.

  • Domaine de la Chanteleuserie Bourgueil Cabernet Franc 2010

    Snoothrank:

Paired this with a 1 1/2" grilled Rib-eye. I hadn't eaten much grilled meat over the long winter of 2012/3, and this was just awesome. Timing is an overlooked contributor to life's delights. Probably consumed this Cabernet Franc a little early. Kind of raw, likely would have benefited both of us with a few more years on it's side, but I will not... Read More

  • Domaine de Vigneau-Chevreau Vouvray Sec 2010

    Snoothrank:

Golden straw bright, modest aromas of dried yellow stone fruits, white flowers and wet rock; abundant flavor notes of zippy peach, white melon, honeysuckle, citrus and mineral across a refreshingly tart and bright viscous texture with a long finish. The Chenin bomb with asparagus, and a very good food wine. Read More

  • C. Joguet Chinon les Petites Roches 2009

    Snoothrank:

Very dark purply color. Lots of berries on the nose, but also with a kind of annoying "olivy" scent. Lots of fun in the mouth. Fairly robust, but not over the top. Flavors include blackberry, tobacco, and some peppery spice. Tannin hits around the edge of the tongue. Olive that was detected in the nose is slightly noticeably at first, but,... Read More
