Touraine is the large, central section of the Loire Valley, around the city of Tours. It contains some of the Loire’s most important appellations, such as Chinon, Bougueil, St-Nicolas-de-Bourgueil, Vouvray, and Montlouis, as well as dozens of grape varieties. It is extremely geologically diverse as well, incorporating clay, sand, tuffeau, and gravel soils. The generic appellation of Touraine Blanc can be a blend of Chenin Blanc, Arbois, Sauvignon Blanc, and Chardonnay, while Touraine Rouge can be any combination of Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cot, Gamay, Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier, Pinot Gris, Pineau d’Aunis, and Grolleau, which makes for some fun and interesting wines. The same grape varieties can also find their way into rose and sparkling wines.

  • Charles Joguet Chinon les Petites Roches France Loire Touraine Chinon 2005

A really fine Chinon with darker fruit than may be typical. Almost curranty fruit marries with tobacco, ancho chili, crushed violets, and potting soil in a plush styled wine with good acidity and supporting tannins that gives this a wonderful mouthfeel. The finish continues the theme with a bit more pronounced acidity refreshing the palate and ... Read More

  • Domaine Bernard Baudry Chinon 2005

Lovely pure fruit laid over a bed of gritty minerality yields a wine that is perfectly at home with rustic fair. Lovely suggestions of tobacco, moist earth and just a minor edge of green veggie notes. This is really very bright and eminently drinkable, best paired with something that can buffer the fine acidity here. This would also work well wi... Read More

The actual bottle I tried was "Terroir", Gouron's reserve bottling. Dark purple wine come from 50 year old vines has nose of black fruits and black olive with well balanced oak and acidity. Since it's a bit tannic, I wonder if it'll hit its best in a couple of years,, Read More

exciting and alive. keep it open for a while but don't waste your time decanting it. it's old and smelly and a real treat. I don't recommend sharing it with friends who are overly sensitive about "corked" bottles, as the funkiness of this stuff can be mistaken as "off" by someone with different tastes. Read More

  • Sauvion Vouvray France Loire Touraine Vouvray White 2007

Beautiful straw color in the glass. The nose has honey and flowers notes. Smooth, velvety and fresh in the mouth. You taste honey, butterscotch, flint with great acidity. Drink as an aperitif or with dessert. I drank it with a salad with a acidic dressing and bacon, onion & goat cheese tart. Good Stuff! Read More
