Touraine is the large, central section of the Loire Valley, around the city of Tours. It contains some of the Loire’s most important appellations, such as Chinon, Bougueil, St-Nicolas-de-Bourgueil, Vouvray, and Montlouis, as well as dozens of grape varieties. It is extremely geologically diverse as well, incorporating clay, sand, tuffeau, and gravel soils. The generic appellation of Touraine Blanc can be a blend of Chenin Blanc, Arbois, Sauvignon Blanc, and Chardonnay, while Touraine Rouge can be any combination of Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cot, Gamay, Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier, Pinot Gris, Pineau d’Aunis, and Grolleau, which makes for some fun and interesting wines. The same grape varieties can also find their way into rose and sparkling wines.

Touraine on Snooth

  • Jean-Claude Bougrier Vouvray 2012

    Snoothrank:

Sweet upon entry and quickly followed by crisp acidity to balance the sugar. Very smooth and paired well with salmon dip and a strong blue cheese. Read More

  • Monmousseau Vouvray 2012

    Snoothrank:

Not bad but not great vouvray. A touch of grapefruit and also pineapple on the nose. Crushed pineapple, creamy lemon, decent acidity on the palate and just a touch on the sweet side. Read More

  • Huet Vouvray le Haut-Lieu Sec 2011

    Snoothrank:

Very interesting somewhat woody nose, but with some peach/melon scents. On the tongue I can, again, get peach or cantaloupe flavors. Good acid structurewhile there is some tartness, it is not enough to chase away anybody who is tart aversemakes it quite refreshing. Maybe Im showing my inexperience, but, if I did not know bettere.g., I had not... Read More

  • Paul Buisse Sauvignon Blanc Touraine 2013

    Snoothrank:

A hint of mint or tarragon greets the nose followed by dusty mineral notes, a touch of green tomato and some sweet apricot undertones. Lean and focused, this is rather austere style of Sauvignon Blanc with fine acids supporting a veil of green tomato and lime flavors. the texture here is attractively fresh and light, though the flavors are clea... • J.m. Raffault Chinon Rose 2013

    Snoothrank:

Spicy and herbal on the nose with suggestions of mint, sweet tomato and ginseng framing faint, earthy red fruit. Bright on the palate, this has nice body and a hint of sugar but remains acid driven with light and lively flavors of red currant and strawberry fruit. A bit simple in the mouth, I do like the zesty character here and the rather elega... Read More
