Touraine is the large, central section of the Loire Valley, around the city of Tours. It contains some of the Loire’s most important appellations, such as Chinon, Bougueil, St-Nicolas-de-Bourgueil, Vouvray, and Montlouis, as well as dozens of grape varieties. It is extremely geologically diverse as well, incorporating clay, sand, tuffeau, and gravel soils. The generic appellation of Touraine Blanc can be a blend of Chenin Blanc, Arbois, Sauvignon Blanc, and Chardonnay, while Touraine Rouge can be any combination of Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cot, Gamay, Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier, Pinot Gris, Pineau d’Aunis, and Grolleau, which makes for some fun and interesting wines. The same grape varieties can also find their way into rose and sparkling wines.

  • Foreau Vouvray Moelleux Réserve Clos Naudin Vouvray 1990

    Snoothrank:

Richly aromatic with a classic wool and oyster nose right of the bat that gains fresh fig and smoke notes with air. Big and sweet on entry with huge sugar balanced by huge acids. There is a big buckwheat honey tone and honeydew melon fruit with apricot and almond notes slowly emerging. This very front loaded with fading intensity on the backend ... Read More

Rich sweet earth on the nose, its mica flecked yet with a jammy, almost figgy sweetness. Fresh and rich with floral top notes and mild insinuations of tomato leaf and dried green pepper and shoe leather and mentholThe mouthfeel is wonderfully fresh and crisp with gently austere tannins and superb acids supporting moderate cranberry and sour red ... • Olga Raffault Chinon les Picasses 1996

    Snoothrank:

Licorice on the nose, enthanolic. Acidic, lean and musty. Lots of earthiness comes through. Some glycerol as well - it feels very viscous, and has an acetone edge. Read More
