Touraine is the large, central section of the Loire Valley, around the city of Tours. It contains some of the Loire’s most important appellations, such as Chinon, Bougueil, St-Nicolas-de-Bourgueil, Vouvray, and Montlouis, as well as dozens of grape varieties. It is extremely geologically diverse as well, incorporating clay, sand, tuffeau, and gravel soils. The generic appellation of Touraine Blanc can be a blend of Chenin Blanc, Arbois, Sauvignon Blanc, and Chardonnay, while Touraine Rouge can be any combination of Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cot, Gamay, Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier, Pinot Gris, Pineau d’Aunis, and Grolleau, which makes for some fun and interesting wines. The same grape varieties can also find their way into rose and sparkling wines.

  • Touraine Chateau Gaillard 2007

Intoxicating nose, floral, sweet with a molasses character. Flavors are almost savory, have good acidity, with zesty grapefruit and even some tropical flavors creeping in alongside warm spices. A very interesting pairing, this is definitely not a typical Sauvignon Blanc from my experience. Read More

  • Touraine Chateau Gaillard 2007

Lots of orange and melons on the nose. Flavor is delicate but a little thin and sour on the finish. I can appreciate the complexities but it's not my thing. Read More

  • Touraine Chateau Gaillard 2007

a lovely nose, slightly woodsy, warm, waxy and almost figgy in its ripeness yet maintains a tension bright, super zesty high acid style, totally refreshing with ripe berry fruit, and under-ripe green and yellow tones, a touch of green tea, some tree bark and mint notes, lemon and grapefruit fruits, delicious with a slightly herbal/medicinal fi... • Domaine Georges et Nicolas Brunet Vouvray Tranquille Demi-Sec Blanc 2001

Paid $60 for this at a fancy restaurant, and I could get it here for $10. Fruity and sweet (even though it is "demi-sec") with a touch of apple. The sommelier compared it to a riesling. Good, but not worth what I paid for it. Read More

  • François Chidaine Red Blend Touraine 2007

Being somewhat young, the acidity is pretty high and the aromas and flavors are still a tad wound up. This is his value wine, but it is a great deal because there tends to be a lot happening in your glass... all sorts of things on the nose. Lemon. Tart apples. "cooking spices" as they say. On the palate, it has a nice mouth feel yet very crisp. ... Read More

  • Pierre Ferrand Chinon Château de Ligré 2005

Being a 2005 vintage, I think there is a tiny bit of aging begining to happen with this wine. The honeyed notes jump out the fruit, while still crisp, is drifting towards the baked side. I keep thinking it's apricot, but I am not going to bet the farm on that. Honey. Light floral. Little mineral. On the palate, it's pretty rich. The honeyed chara... Read More
