Touraine is the large, central section of the Loire Valley, around the city of Tours. It contains some of the Loire’s most important appellations, such as Chinon, Bougueil, St-Nicolas-de-Bourgueil, Vouvray, and Montlouis, as well as dozens of grape varieties. It is extremely geologically diverse as well, incorporating clay, sand, tuffeau, and gravel soils. The generic appellation of Touraine Blanc can be a blend of Chenin Blanc, Arbois, Sauvignon Blanc, and Chardonnay, while Touraine Rouge can be any combination of Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cot, Gamay, Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier, Pinot Gris, Pineau d’Aunis, and Grolleau, which makes for some fun and interesting wines. The same grape varieties can also find their way into rose and sparkling wines.

  • Couly-Dutheil Chinon Domaine Rene Couly 2011

    Snoothrank:

The 2011 Les Chanteaux Chinon white is a very nice example of Chenin blanc that has a bit of maturity. The color, aroma, flavir and texture are rich, velvety and honeyed. No himts of oxidation, which arer so common in Chenin that is not fresh.Ansolutely delicious, satisfying wine, and a very fine example of dry Loire Chenin lanc. Read More

  • Domaine Bernard Baudry Chinon les Granges 2010

    Snoothrank:

Lots of fresh herbaceous blackberry on the nose here, coupled with refreshing hints of menthol and cough drop. My better half and I both though the nose was a bit like a dolcetto. On the palate it was slightly less complex. Lots of plush, soft tannin and a delicate balance of flavors. The body was a defining characteristic of this wine - very mo... Read More

  • Domaine Pichot Vouvray Domaine le Peu de la Moriette 2012

    Snoothrank:

honeysuckle, pineapple. Slightly off dry. Tasty overall. I never drink Chenin Blanc so I wasnt sure what to expect. I think, not sure...im not a pro that I would like this wine to be a bit less sweet and probably more acidity. Still great with a fresh salad for dinner. Read More
