Touraine is the large, central section of the Loire Valley, around the city of Tours. It contains some of the Loire’s most important appellations, such as Chinon, Bougueil, St-Nicolas-de-Bourgueil, Vouvray, and Montlouis, as well as dozens of grape varieties. It is extremely geologically diverse as well, incorporating clay, sand, tuffeau, and gravel soils. The generic appellation of Touraine Blanc can be a blend of Chenin Blanc, Arbois, Sauvignon Blanc, and Chardonnay, while Touraine Rouge can be any combination of Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cot, Gamay, Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier, Pinot Gris, Pineau d’Aunis, and Grolleau, which makes for some fun and interesting wines. The same grape varieties can also find their way into rose and sparkling wines.

I bought this bottle of wine from a shop in Chinon when I went there back in May.Vouvray is an AOC created in 1936 at the eastern end of the Loire valley not far from Tours and the grape variety is Chenin blanc, known locally as 'pineau' although small proportions of a grape called arbois are allowed but raely used. Snoothrank:

I bought this bottle of wine for 8 euros from a shop in Chinon back in May when I visited that area. • Clos Roche Blanche Pif Cabernet Franc Cot Case of 6 Bottles 2011

    Snoothrank:

All quinine and root vegetables on the nose with lots of rich, loamy earth and smoky tobacco aromas. Both firm at its core, and round with the slight fleshiness of youth, this is too young today with lots of the quinine and earthy root vegetable flavors that show up on the nose. Quite tannic with fruit tannins, this really does take after Amaron... Read More
