Touraine is the large, central section of the Loire Valley, around the city of Tours. It contains some of the Loire’s most important appellations, such as Chinon, Bougueil, St-Nicolas-de-Bourgueil, Vouvray, and Montlouis, as well as dozens of grape varieties. It is extremely geologically diverse as well, incorporating clay, sand, tuffeau, and gravel soils. The generic appellation of Touraine Blanc can be a blend of Chenin Blanc, Arbois, Sauvignon Blanc, and Chardonnay, while Touraine Rouge can be any combination of Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cot, Gamay, Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier, Pinot Gris, Pineau d’Aunis, and Grolleau, which makes for some fun and interesting wines. The same grape varieties can also find their way into rose and sparkling wines.

  • Redagic  Malbec originated in France but the taste of a wine is not only ... a bottle of La Gourmandire Touraine Cot and I recall that it was fairly lightweight in style .Malbec is sometimes used in a blend in Bordeaux but the only 100% malbec I have heard of from Bordeaux is from Chateau Tire Pe. • Les Cailloux Saint-Nicolas-de-Bourgueil 2014

This young and juicy wine is much more dense and fruit-forward than recent years (which had poor harvest results in most cases) and quite drinkable now. Café-style Saint-Nicolas-de-Bourgueil at its best - bursting with cherries on the nose - almost like Nouveau. Rich berry flavours on entry - especially blueberry (bleuet) that explode but finis... Great raspberry scent on this Touraine wine with similar red berry flavours on entry. The wine is somewhat light and cheerful - perfect for drinking alone or with light meat dishes. Excellent price - especially for downtown Paris. 85 points. Read More

  • Clos de la Deviniere Maison Natale de Rabelais Touraine Blanc 2010

I bought this bottle of wine for 5 euros from the gift shop at Chinon castle ... I visited it last year. The Touraine AOC was created in 1939 [although viticulture has been going on here for hundreds of years ] for red, white and rose wines from a large area around the town of Tours. It is an ' umbrella ' AOC because it includes a number of sma... Read More

A Marks and Spencer selection purchased in Bruxelles. This Touraine is 100% Sauvignon Blanc with a musk and smoke nose typical of the region; flavour is dominated by musky grass with a salty finish. Very good value and recommended with fish or seafood. 88 points. Read More

  • Cuvee Signee By Romain Parisis Chinon 2011

Pretty good for an inexpensive Cab Franc. Light and airy with red cherry, cranberry, a touch of mustiness and a bit of white pepper. The tannins are fairly tight grained and mild, medium acidity and a medium finish. Read More
