Sancerre Wine

Sancerre is an appellation located in the so-called Upper Loire -- the eastern end of the Loire Valley. It is best known for its brisk, mineral white wines, made from the Sauvignon Blanc grape, though red and rose Sancerre, made from Pinot Noir, is increasingly popular.

Just as in Chablis, the chalky-white Kimmeridgian soil is what really sets the wines apart from those in nearby appellations. Named after a town in Dorset which also shares this geological formation, Kimmeridgian soil is a combination of clay and limestone filled with billions of tiny, fossilized oyster shells. Unsurprisingly, Sancerre goes exceptionally well with oysters.

  • Thomas-Labaille Sancerre les Monts Damnés 2011

Tight and dusty on the nose with a fairly floral character and only light suggestions of weedy red fruit. Light and fresh on the palate, this is relatively small-scaled but nicely textured with integrated acidity that keeps this fresh yet supple. The fruit shows notes of apple fruit with a wash of cherry and perhaps a suggestion of almond on the... Read More

Stony, mineral nose with nice strawberry aromas. Some herbal notes. Cranberry. It's crisp and refreshing in the palate with flavors of cranberry, light pomegranate, strawberry and raspberry.
