Sancerre Wine

Sancerre is an appellation located in the so-called Upper Loire -- the eastern end of the Loire Valley. It is best known for its brisk, mineral white wines, made from the Sauvignon Blanc grape, though red and rose Sancerre, made from Pinot Noir, is increasingly popular.

Just as in Chablis, the chalky-white Kimmeridgian soil is what really sets the wines apart from those in nearby appellations. Named after a town in Dorset which also shares this geological formation, Kimmeridgian soil is a combination of clay and limestone filled with billions of tiny, fossilized oyster shells. Unsurprisingly, Sancerre goes exceptionally well with oysters.

  • Holy crap...1994 Grand Cru Chablis? Sounds amazing...and also sounds like it ... glass of non descript, young Sancerre yesterday and enjoyed it. Reminded me that it's a place that deserves a little bit of attention. Also it shares that chalky, heavily mineral quality of Chablis. Hearing Gerard Boulay is top notch, and Cotat also up there thoug... Read More

  • Well, after drinking about a dozen different Zins last night and eating a half ... polished off a 2011 Cherrier Sancerre.  2011 was not supposed to be a great vintage in the Loire, but this was fine.  At under $20, I have no complaints whatsoever. Safe to say we'll be laying off the beef and Zin, but I think odds favor hitting some other reds ... • Hubert Brochard Sancerre Blanc 2011

    Snoothrank:

Smells of unripe fruit or melon, and granny smith, with some floral notes and salty minerality/flint. Strangely enough I get the faint hint of something warm and sweet on the nose, kind of like vanilla caramel. A dry wine that is lush/soft on the palate - the acid here is definitely more supportive than dominant, and highlights a medium bodied w... Read More
