Pays Nantais Wine

The Pays Nantais comprises the western part of the Loire Valley, mostly southeast of the city of Nantes. The wine for which this region is known is Muscadet, made from the Melon de Bourgogne grape. The best of these come from the Sevre-et-Maine, named for two of the area’s rivers.

  • Le Fils des Gras Moutons Muscadet Sevre et Maine 2010

Excellent Muscadet, the back label says these grapes come from 18 acres of vines that average over 50 yrs of age in Gras Moutons. Light yellow in color, there's a bit of aroma of lemon pith which may show better if we drank it a bit less cool. Nice lemon cream, a touch of white grapefuit, a hint of white pepper, lively acidity and a medium finish. Read More

  • Muscadet de Sèvre et Maine Sur Lie Château du Jaunay 2011

Very fruity noseyou can get tropical (banana, mango), citrus, and stone fruit hints. On the tongue the initial sensation is similar fruitiness. Fortunately, some stiff acids efficiently remove the sweetness sensation and provide a very refreshing wine. Read More

  • Chateau l'Oiseau d'Or Muscadet Sevre et Maine Sur Lie 2012

Almost flinty on the nose with the rather direct aromas of chalk and oyster shell gaining some heathery depth from the lees ageing along with a rosemary topnote. A touch round on entry but with terrific acidity this comes together well on the palate. Theres lovely lemon curd fruit here with a hint of Asian pear and a nice basenote of leesy spic... Read More
