Savennières Wine

Appellation created in 1952 for white wines produced from three communes around the village of Savennières in the Loire Valley west of Angers. The wines are produced from Chenin Blanc, and can be dry or sweet. Three Savennières appellations exist: two small sub-appellations (Savennières-Roche-aux-Moines and Savennières-Coulée-de-Serrant) and the more wide-spread Savennières. The vineyards are located on three schist hills on the northwest bank of the Loire river. Botrytis infection is common, leading to noble rot. This is noticeable both in the sweet and dry wines. In dry wines, it can provide complexing characters and increase mineral characters in the wine. Good Savennières wines tend to be complex, long and balanced with quince, lanolin, chamomile, honey, mineral, straw and quinine characters often noted.

  • Good dry Brut (not the off dry version I had tonight) Champagne first choice. ... chenin blanc, whether from Savennieres or South Africa. In Oz and SE Asia have found a number of Aussie and Kiwi chards and dry semillons (and sparklings) to work. Sake works just fine, too.Plenty of other options, I'm sure, but these are what I've consumed the m... Read More

  • Château d'Epiré Savennières Cuvée Spéciale 2010

Pours a clear and bright gold color. Nice scents of wet rock, hard minerals, quince and some citrus. The citrus, grapefruit, hits the palate first. In the middle there is nice undertones of wet rocks and minerals. Finshes up with more grapefruit flavors. Nicely balanced with nice acidity. Very refreshing and easy to drink. This is a grea... • Spent the morning yesterday with Mme Laroche of Domaine aux Moines and enjoyed a vertical tasting of her excellent wines. We tasted the 2006, 2004, 2008, 2000, and 1992 (in that order) and then the Moelleux 2007 and Doux 2007. A fascinating insight into vintage differences.
