Coteaux du Layon is an appellation created in 1950,[although there has been viticulture here for over 1000 years] for sweet white wines made of the chenin blanc grape [called 'pineau de Loire'in this area] from 27 communes to the south of the town of Angers along the river Layon a tributary of the Loire. There are three more prestigious sub-appellations within this ,Coteaux du Layon Chaume,Quarts de Chaume, and Bonnezeaux. The Bonnezeaux appellation was created in 1951 and refers only to the single commune of Thouarce and there are only 110 hectares under vine. There are schist soils on the slopes of the north bank of the river Layon facing south and the grapes are affected by the botyrtis fungus just as in Sauternes
