Anjou Wine

Anjou is an appellation created in 1987,although there has been viticulture here for centuries, for red, rose, white and sparkling wines from 150 communes in the central Loire Valley around the city of Angers. Virtually every grape available in the Loire is grown here, and much inexpensive rose is made, but its best appellations are Savennieres, which produces powerful, mineral-driven, ageworthy dry white wines made from Chenin Blanc, and Coteaux du Layon, which produces sweet wines from the same variety that can improve in bottle for many decades.

  • The appellations of Anjou Blanc and Anjou Rouge sound a little unsexy compared with Chinon or Bourgueil but don't let this region pass you by. Some wonderful Chenin Blanc based whites and great Cabernet Franc reds as well as a whole host of rosés (Cabernet d'Anjou) are waiting to tempt you. And don't forget the hidden gems of Savennières (mine...
