Anjou Wine

Anjou is a large region in the central Loire Valley around the city of Angers. Virtually every grape available in the Loire is grown here, and much inexpensive rose is made, but its best appellations are Savennieres, which produces powerful, mineral-driven, ageworthy dry white wines made from Chenin Blanc, and Coteaux du Layon, which produces sweet wines from the same variety that can improve in bottle for many decades.

  • The appellations of Anjou Blanc and Anjou Rouge sound a little unsexy compared with Chinon or Bourgueil but don't let this region pass you by. Some wonderful Chenin Blanc based whites and great Cabernet Franc reds as well as a whole host of rosés (Cabernet d'Anjou) are waiting to tempt you. And don't forget the hidden gems of Savennières (mine...

  • Coteaux du Layon Vignoble Galineau 2007

    Snoothrank:

I bought three bottles of this wine from the website www.bidforwine.co.uk/auctions/show/90560 for £15. Coteaux du Layon is an appellation created in 1950 for sweet white wines made of the chenin blanc grape [ called pineau de Loire in this area ] from 27 communes to the south of the town of Angers along the river Layon,a tributary of the Loire.T... • I had a wine I have not had for many years,a Rose D'Anjou from the negociant house of Remy Pannier. It is a semi sweet or semi dry wine with plenty of a redcurrant and raspberry  style fruit and it was fairly pleasant although I am not sure if it was a good match for the tuna salad I ate with it. Rose D'Anjou was very popular back in the late 70... Read More

  • We brought the wine to a Rosh Hashanah dinner last night.  There was lots ... that was nice, a red from Anjou (so Cab Franc) that was a little more challenging (and a little more tannic, but still pretty smooth).  Our host likes Sancerre, so I brought one even though I didn't think it was ideal for the meal.  It went fast as an aperitif.  Brou... • Domaine des Forges Anjou-Villages "Les 3 C" 2010

    Snoothrank:

Very dusty/earthy nose. Smells like my great-grandmother's closet. Pairs well with braised pork shoulder. Acidic, with lots of terroir showing through. A surprise on the first sip, then it settles in. Improved after being open for a day; blunted the sharpness down a bit and brought out a little more fruit. Read More
