Loire Wine

The Loire River valley is a massively varied viticultural region in northwestern France. Its climate varies from the continental one of its eastern edge to the balmier Pays Nantais, which is warmed by the Gulf Stream. Unlike some other regions, which are dominated by cooperatives, this one is composed mostly of small family farms.

Melon de Bourgogne, the grape of Muscadet, is the main variety planted in the western Loire. These are brisk wines traditionally paired with oysters. The central Loire is the home of subtle and ageworthy reds made from Cabernet Franc and of Chenin Blanc, which makes some of the greatest sweet and dry white wines in the world. The eastern Loire contains Sancerre and Pouilly-Fume, both made from Sauvignon Blanc (though red and rose Sancerre is made from Pinot Noir). That, however, is just the beginning. The Loire is the most diverse region in all France.

The Loire is known as the “garden of France” for its bucolic beauty and agricultural variety. Its Read more »

  • Celebration Crémant de Loire 2008

    Snoothrank:

You start with the price and soon realise that this is excellent value, and as pleasing as many cheaper champagnes. It would be an excellent choice for when you need six bottles for a gathering of some sort. The main quality is the combination of good depth of fruit with a nice refreshing tweak of acidity. The wide scope of attendant flavours of... Read More

  • Terre de Fumee Coteaux du Giennois 2011

    Snoothrank:

It is rare to see this wine in BC - especially one from the 2011 vintage. But the well-known and respected Henri Bourgeois has produced an inexpensive, nicely aged Coteaux du Giennois with a solid, musky quince, lemon and mown grass nose and more musk and smoke on the palate (hence the wine's proprietary name). Solid value. 87 points. Read More

  • Weird thread to revive. Twice no less!Anyhow, I suppose the OP and the other ... banned acidification. In the Loire, it's rainy and gloomy a lot of the time, so you can't irrigate. In the south of Spain and in Washington, it's dry desert so you can irrigate. In Sauternes, they want sweet wine, so in case they don't get enough botrytis, they ca... Read More

  • Clement et Florian Berthier Sancerre Vieilles Vignes Sur Silex 2013

    Snoothrank:

The Sancerre wine district is a small area which surrounds the Loire Valley in Central France. Sancerre wines are famous for their crisp, fragrant white wines made from the Sauvignon Blanc grape. The Clement et Florian Berthier Sancerre has the classic sharp Sauvignon Blanc initial aroma but little in the way of fragrance. It is vibrantly pep... Read More
