Loire Wine

The Loire River valley is a massively varied viticultural region in northwestern France. Its climate varies from the continental one of its eastern edge to the balmier Pays Nantais, which is warmed by the Gulf Stream. Unlike some other regions, which are dominated by cooperatives, this one is composed mostly of small family farms.

Melon de Bourgogne, the grape of Muscadet, is the main variety planted in the western Loire. These are brisk wines traditionally paired with oysters. The eastern Loire contains Sancerre and Pouilly-Fume, both made from Sauvignon Blanc (though red and rose Sancerre is made from Pinot Noir). That, however, is just the beginning. The Loire is the most diverse region in all France.

The Loire is known as the “garden of France” for its bucolic beauty and agricultural variety. Its Read more »

  • Olga Raffault Chinon les Picasses 1996

Rich sweet earth on the nose, its mica flecked yet with a jammy, almost figgy sweetness. Fresh and rich with floral top notes and mild insinuations of tomato leaf and dried green pepper and shoe leather and mentholThe mouthfeel is wonderfully fresh and crisp with gently austere tannins and superb acids supporting moderate cranberry and sour red ... • Huët Vouvray Moëlleux le Mont 1997

This has beautifully purity on the nose with beautiful spiced apricot notes, waxy fruits, and grace notes of peach tea and vanilla custard. Deep and perfumed. In the mouth the tremendous acidity keeps this very lively and allows the mineral notes to cut and contrast the honey dipped apricot fruits. Superb balance and quite long this is just a b... • Barton & Guestier Vouvray 2006

Words continue to fail to describe how infinitely drinkable this wine is. Retaining metallic and airy elements without overtly sharp or dry notes, this Vouvray moves equally well at fast and slow paces (i.e.: you can slam this mother down like Blue Ruin, but not, it should be said, because you have to). Currently only tried on its own, but my am... Read More
