Moving away from France, I've heard Australian Hunter Valley Sémillon can age nicely, and is at its best with about ten years of bottle age.   Very light pear and apple notes leading through from the nose to the finish, where it mingles with a lightly fungal minerality.

I've had a few nice ...-savennieres-roche-aux-moines-1995/ Sadly I don't really have the money or the space to buy wines to lay down for the future at the moment. Which is a pity, as I've heard both the current Burgundy and Bordeaux wines coming on the market are both fairly good and (due to financial pressures) a bit cheaper than the last few years    (hide)

  I love aged wines, so I prefer to decant youthful wines that would have evolved ... For whites, I always decant Savennieres, Smaragd-level Gruners and Rieslings, good Burgundy, Priorat, Hermitage, and 'super Frulians'. There are more, but the rule of thumb is if the wine has aging potential and is being consumed too young, decant. Also, I have never experienced damaging youthful, structured wines by decanting. However, people are too quick to decant older, mature wines for the sole reason of removing sediment. A basket is much more effective and gentle in handling these delicate wines.    (hide)

  Chateau de Chamboureau Savennieres Cuvee d'Avant 2004

  Delicious. On the nose lemons.. nuts.. floral... layered flavors and something that reminds me of candied dried fruits. The palate has a fairly rich and round body that is balanced with the crisp acity and similar flavors to the nose with addition of ripe apple flavors.

  Something was seriously wrong with the wine - on the nose you get rotten eggs, a clear indication of over-sulfited wine. On the palate not much better, and would never buy this again.
