Muscat de Rivesaltes is a sweet wine appellation covering a large portion of Rousillon, France. Along with the appellation known simply as Rivesaltes, it is the largest sweet appellation in the country.
The wines are vin doux naturels, naturally sweet fortified wines. These are produced using the mutage method developed by 13th century physician Arnaud de Villeneuve that adds spirit to fermenting grapes to halt fermentation and preserve their natural sweetness. Muscat à Petit Grains is the main grape used, along with Muscat d’Alexandrie (Muscat à Gros Grains). The duo are responsible for imparting flavors of honeyed stone, citrus and tropical fruits with aromatic white flowers. With age these become more honeyed and caramel-ly, and the fruit flavors take on a baked pie or stewed quality.

Vineyards are not common on the quasi desertic volcanic plateau one can find around this beautifull village of the middle-north of the Hérault county ("departement"...

The grapes are given a 3 week maceration and fermentation, at which point a small amount of neutral grape spirit is added to the must, w... Read More
