Roussillon Wine

The Roussillon is a giant wine-producing region in the south of France. With the Languedoc, it produces something like a quarter of France’s total wine output. Culturally, the region is Catalan -- it is just across the Pyrenees from Spain’s Cataluña region.  Some of the best wines from this region are dessert wines. Muscat de Rivesaltes has been famous since the 14th century. Maury and Banyuls are some otehr excellent dessert wines from the region. The Roussillon also produces plenty of ripe, southerly dry red wine, with Grenache acting as the main variety, and a little white.

  • Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco 2009

    Snoothrank:

Sweet herbs, slightly roasted red fruit fruit, cocoa, and an incipient truffle note appear on the nose. With sweet fruity on entry, soft tannins, big size, and great acids this makes quite an impression in the mouth but the tannins show a slight bitter edge, the sweetness comes from the rather high alcohol, and the fruit is decidedly simple in t... • Grande Cuvee 1531 de Aimery Cremant de Limoux. Sieur d'Arques

    Snoothrank:

Read More

  • Chateau d'Esclans Whispering Angel Rose 2012

    Snoothrank:

This lovely rose wine has a racey nose of acidic red cranberry and even strawberry sugar; the entry is balanced, if slightly bitter, with more strawberry on the medium finish. A superior rose with a rare gravity of character. Let's say 90 points... Read More

  • Laurent Miquel Viognier Nord Sud 2012

    Snoothrank:

Bottom line: Rich, luscious, and delicious. Milk chocolate and tropical fruit with whipped cream on top mingle with pineapple and lime. The sweet, delicate finish turns into pink and orange fruits on the palate. Clearly, this grape has an affinity for oak and late summer nights. A+! Read More

  • Laurent Miquel Viognier Nord Sud 2012

    Snoothrank:

Slightly spicy, honeyed aromas with good floral notes. Nice and juicy, a little oily with a touch of cream, this wine is just enough bite to grab hold of and enough fruit to keep it interesting. For 14 bucks it's a great value. Read More

  • Château d'Anglès la Clape Classique 2009

    Snoothrank:

This unrecognized "cru" from Languedoc is a steal (if you are so fortunate as to find it). The bouquet is heavily influenced by the non-Grenache components - there is coffee, wild black current, a hint of chocolate candy - and the palate is pushed by a solid tannic structure with red currant and cherry on the finish with that ubiquitous coffee....
