Roussillon Wine

The Roussillon is a giant wine-producing region in the south of France. With the Languedoc, it produces something like a quarter of France’s total wine output. Culturally, the region is Catalan -- it is just across the Pyrenees from Spain’s Cataluña region.  Some of the best wines from this region are dessert wines. Muscat de Rivesaltes has been famous since the 14th century. Maury and Banyuls are some otehr excellent dessert wines from the region. The Roussillon also produces plenty of ripe, southerly dry red wine, with Grenache acting as the main variety, and a little white.

  • Domaine Lafage 'Centenaire' Blanc 2014

    Snoothrank:

The 2014 edition of Centenaire Blanc from Domaine Lafage of Roussillon opens with a nice tisane (camomile) and gooseberry nose, but falters somewhat on entry with less balancing sweetness in the core than in the previous vintage; there are more medicinal notes (astringency) coupled with unripe gooseberry. It seems a wee bit thin and needs a doll... Read More

  • Virgile Joly Merlot 2015

    Snoothrank:

Another Naked Wines selection. Strange to be drinking all these young Wines recently. A dark, somewhat translucent dusty Purple Red in the Glass. Opens with Plum/Boysenberry; then a bit of alcohol in leather/plum honey/brown sugar; then cola, cherry, oak, and nutmeg. For the obvious youth, surprisingly soft mouthful with light to medium Tannins ... Read More

  • D - there's a pretty good PR campaign for the Languedoc-Roussillon region. They've relabeled it as the Sud these days.In NYC they host a lot of events to showcase the wines. I'm not sure where the money is from, but they're one of the better promotional groups for a region. They're as good as the Argentines actually - there's some kind of event ... Read More
