Roussillon Wine

The Roussillon is a giant wine-producing region in the south of France. With the Languedoc, it produces something like a quarter of France’s total wine output. Culturally, the region is Catalan -- it is just across the Pyrenees from Spain’s Cataluña region.  Some of the best wines from this region are dessert wines. Muscat de Rivesaltes has been famous since the 14th century. Maury and Banyuls are some otehr excellent dessert wines from the region. The Roussillon also produces plenty of ripe, southerly dry red wine, with Grenache acting as the main variety, and a little white.

  • Les Clos de Paulilles Banyuls Rimage 2003

    Snoothrank:

This bottle of wine was part of a lot I bought on the website www.bidforwine.co.uk/auctions/show/68532. Banyuls is an appellation created in 1936,although viticulture in the area goes back centuries, for red and white fortified wines from around the Mediterranean seaside town of that name between Perpignan and the Spanish border. This is the same ... • Domaine Galetis Pays D' Oc France Pinot Noir 2014

    Snoothrank:

a very complex wine that surprises one that it is not from burgundy. even with its young age it passes well over the palate causeing one to speculate how well this cuvee could be after spending sometime in ones cellar. Read More

  • M. Chapoutier Bila-Haut Blanc 2014

    Snoothrank:

This most recent edition of the Bila Haut (Chapoutier) Cotes du Rousillon Blanc is full of tropical fruit and garden flowers (generally speaking) and is juicy, citric, and pear-like on the palate. This is a very good white from southern France and excellent value. For example, you will not find a Bordeaux or Bourgogne Blanc anywhere near this ... Read More

  • I wouldn't try to recommend wines at all given the scant information we ... could buy Bila Haut's Roussillon for $15 or so, because Parker says it's genius, and if you don't like it, you learn that a certain style that might appeal to Parker doesn't work for you.  Or you do like it, and you can keep buying that kind of wine.  If you have frien... • Domaine Lafage Tessellae Grenache Syrah Mourvedre 2013

    Snoothrank:

For an AOP Cotes du Roussillons blend, this Domaine Lafage is very good; the scent of the wine is of cassis, cherries in sugar with a hint of orange and cream (like the Creamsicle bar). The entry is smooth and sweet - appropriately, however - with more blackcurrant (cassis) on the palate. Finish is medium, and the wine is perfect for immediate... Read More

  • Domaine de l'Olibet les Proses Grenache Noir 2014

    Snoothrank:

The density of this country wine is amazing... the very forward scent of sweet, baked cherry pie and burning white sugar... something expected from old vines Australian style. Entry is slightly less full than the Aussie might make it, but the wine comes rich, smooth, creamy and semi-sweet on the palate with a hint of almond bitter on the finish.... Read More
