Roussillon Wine

The Roussillon is a giant wine-producing region in the south of France. With the Languedoc, it produces something like a quarter of France’s total wine output. Culturally, the region is Catalan -- it is just across the Pyrenees from Spain’s Cataluña region.  Some of the best wines from this region are dessert wines. Muscat de Rivesaltes has been famous since the 14th century. Maury and Banyuls are some otehr excellent dessert wines from the region. The Roussillon also produces plenty of ripe, southerly dry red wine, with Grenache acting as the main variety, and a little white.

  • Gerard Bertrand Cremant de Limoux Brut Rose Cuvee Thomas Jefferson 2013

    Snoothrank:

I recently found this Cremant de Limoux for sale at my local supermarket. They just started carrying Gerard Bertrand's wines, which none of the local wine/liquor stores carry. This sparkling wine is quite nice for the money, very dry, medium small bubbles, with a clean aftertaste. However, there are several other brands in this price range that ... Read More

  • Benjamin Darnault Maris la Senche 2013

    Snoothrank:

A recent Naked Wines Selection. Love that Dark Purple Red opaqueness in the Glass. Opens with loads of Mint and Thyme; then on to a smoky Blueberry/Plum; then finishes with Fig and Stewed Blue/Black Fruit. The Blue/Black fruit carries over to the mouth, with a long finish of a bit of Concorde Grape, Oak, and Honey/Smoke. Still bit of an alcohol ... Read More

  • Bartenura Moscato 2013

    Snoothrank:

For you sweeter palette drinkers this is heaven. The winemaker says "Crisp and refreshing, semi sweet, with lingering pear, tangerine, nectar and melon flavors on the finish. Perfect with dessert or fresh fruit, or sipping poolside." Read More

  • Barathym de la Garigue d'Aumelas 2014

    Snoothrank:

I bought this bottle of wine from a shop in London's Kensington for £9.90.It is from the Languedoc appellation in the south of France. Languedoc is a very large area stretching from the Rhone delta to the Spanish border which got AOC status in the 1980's although viticulture here goes back to before the Romans. Languedoc is responsible for about... Read More

  • Mas Gabinele Faugeres 2013

    Snoothrank:

I bought this bottle of wine from a stand at The London France Show back in January for £10. Faugeres is an appellation for red, white and rose wines from the area around the village of that name about 10 miles north of the town of Beziers. Before 1982 it was a part of the Coteaux de Languedoc AOC.My bottle is made from a blend of 40% syrah,30% gr... Snoothrank:

This bottle of wine was part of a lot I bought on the website www.bidforwine.co.uk/auctions/show/68532. Banyuls is an appellation created in 1936,although viticulture in the area goes back centuries, for red and white fortified wines from around the Mediterranean seaside town of that name between Perpignan and the Spanish border. This is the same ... • M. Chapoutier Bila-Haut Blanc 2014

    Snoothrank:

This most recent edition of the Bila Haut (Chapoutier) Cotes du Rousillon Blanc is full of tropical fruit and garden flowers (generally speaking) and is juicy, citric, and pear-like on the palate. This is a very good white from southern France and excellent value. For example, you will not find a Bordeaux or Bourgogne Blanc anywhere near this ... Read More

    Wine review by zufrieden

  • I wouldn't try to recommend wines at all given the scant information we ... could buy Bila Haut's Roussillon for $15 or so, because Parker says it's genius, and if you don't like it, you learn that a certain style that might appeal to Parker doesn't work for you.  Or you do like it, and you can keep buying that kind of wine.  If you have frien...
