Roussillon Wine

The Roussillon is a giant wine-producing region in the south of France. With the Languedoc, it produces something like a quarter of France’s total wine output. Culturally, the region is Catalan -- it is just across the Pyrenees from Spain’s Cataluña region.  Some of the best wines from this region are dessert wines. Muscat de Rivesaltes has been famous since the 14th century. Maury and Banyuls are some otehr excellent dessert wines from the region. The Roussillon also produces plenty of ripe, southerly dry red wine, with Grenache acting as the main variety, and a little white.

  • Barons de Rothschild Lafite Pauillac Reserve Speciale 2010

My brother-in-law - perhaps a little intimidated by my knowledge of French wine (which is modest), bought me this blend from Rothschild. As a cuvee, it is quite good... all the expected definition of a Pauillac (rouge). Very nervy, with a lot of light tannin, this wine is perfect now for any number of meat dishes; there is a herbaceous nose and... Read More

  • Domaine de Fontsainte Corbieres Gris de Gris 2015

Somewhat chubby fruit aromas of cherry and strawberry in the nose. This is refreshing and zesty in the mouth with more notes of cherry, strawberry and adding watermelon, citrus zest and green apple with a bit of wood on the finish. Read More

  • Gerard Bertrand Cremant de Limoux Brut Rose Cuvee Thomas Jefferson 2013

I recently found this Cremant de Limoux for sale at my local supermarket. They just started carrying Gerard Bertrand's wines, which none of the local wine/liquor stores carry. This sparkling wine is quite nice for the money, very dry, medium small bubbles, with a clean aftertaste. However, there are several other brands in this price range that ... Read More

  • Benjamin Darnault Maris la Senche 2013

A recent Naked Wines Selection. Love that Dark Purple Red opaqueness in the Glass. Opens with loads of Mint and Thyme; then on to a smoky Blueberry/Plum; then finishes with Fig and Stewed Blue/Black Fruit. The Blue/Black fruit carries over to the mouth, with a long finish of a bit of Concorde Grape, Oak, and Honey/Smoke. Still bit of an alcohol ... Read More
