Roussillon Wine

The Roussillon is a giant wine-producing region in the south of France. With the Languedoc, it produces something like a quarter of France’s total wine output. Culturally, the region is Catalan -- it is just across the Pyrenees from Spain’s Cataluña region.  Some of the best wines from this region are dessert wines. Muscat de Rivesaltes has been famous since the 14th century. Maury and Banyuls are some otehr excellent dessert wines from the region. The Roussillon also produces plenty of ripe, southerly dry red wine, with Grenache acting as the main variety, and a little white.

  • Patch Block Cabernet Sauvignon 2010

    Snoothrank:

I'm actually a fan of this wine. I initially picked it up because my local supermarket had a sale on it. To tell the truth, I wasn't expecting much. But, I was pleasantly surprised. I prefer red wine over whites or rose's because i like the tannin and acidity a deep earthy red has to offer. This wine had to right balance of tannin and acid.... Read More

  • Domaine Font Mars Picpoul 2012

    Snoothrank:

Tight and slightly herbal on the nose with subtle shadings of dried herb stem floating over a base of flinty minerality. This is lean and fresh in the mouth and very acid driven with some crap apple and lime pith fruit and subtle herbal shadings offering a bit of complexity. Gaining a little richness on the backend, and some notes of white peach... Read More

  • Domaine de Cantagrils Picpoul de Pinet 2012

    Snoothrank:

Dusty and spicy on the nose this shows a fine mineral base with gently drying apple blossoms and crisp apple fruit on the nose. Bright, fresh and acid driven in the mouth, this has a fair amount of weight and richness to it yet remains crisp and focused with slightly creamy apple and tart peach flavors on the palate. The acid drives the long fin... Read More

  • Chateau Saint Jacques d'Albas Minervois 2004

    Snoothrank:

I bought this bottle of wine as part of a lot on www.bidforwine.co.uk/auctions/show/56628 .The Minervois AOC was granted in 1985 for red, white and rose wines [though most are red ] in western Languedoc to the north of the Corbiere. Chateau Saint Jacques d'Albas is an ancient 180 acre property,40% of which is given over to vineyards that was bou... Read More

  • La Cigale' Chateau le Bouis Corbieres 2011

    Snoothrank:

I bought this bottle of wine for £5 when I attended the London France Show back in January. It is from the Corbieres AOC. The Corbieres is a large area of south-west France between the towns of Perpignan, Beziers and Carcasonne where there is a considerable variety of terroir from the coast up in to the hills and where a number of grape types ar... • Francesco Rinaldi Dolcetto d'Alba Roussot 2013

    Snoothrank:

Oddly sliced peaches are the first notes I get on the nose followed by a rather assertive floral white flower and Iris note. Air brings out some rust and rhubarb but this remains a bit coy on the nose. On entry this is notably structured, a bit medicinal and white earth toned, with austere tannins, in a strict, austere, and unrelentingly Cannubi... Read More

  • Mascarello Bartolo Dolcetto d'Alba 2012

    Snoothrank:

Rue, Monrobiolo, Bussia the piece in Barolo, 5000 to 6000 bottles Deep violet and almond aromas on the nose are a little inky and show some complex graphite notes. Perfumy, rich and soft in the mouth, this shows some dusty tannins and mineral inflections on the palate along with brilliant, polished and beautiful flavors of black cherry and red b... Read More
