Roussillon Wine

The Roussillon is a giant wine-producing region in the south of France. With the Languedoc, it produces something like a quarter of France’s total wine output. Culturally, the region is Catalan -- it is just across the Pyrenees from Spain’s Cataluña region.  Some of the best wines from this region are dessert wines. Muscat de Rivesaltes has been famous since the 14th century. Maury and Banyuls are some otehr excellent dessert wines from the region. The Roussillon also produces plenty of ripe, southerly dry red wine, with Grenache acting as the main variety, and a little white.

  • Chateau d'Oupia Minervois Rose 2012

Tried it at a local bistro. All four of us enjoyed it. Medium body with nice bouquet, little fruity but really an excellent value. We ordered a case through a local distributor. Both vintages 2012 & 2013 were great. Read More

  • Abbotts & Delaunay Languedoc Reserve 2013

This Languedoc white leans on the aromatic varietal Vermentino for backbone and on the nose presents cola nut and a miscellany of garden flowers. On entry, there are tisane and black tea flavours associated with Roussanne and Marsanne along with greater viscosity and mouth-feel than Vermentino alone can provide. Quite thirst-quenching and soft... Read More

  • Domaine Lafage Cuvee Centenaire Blanc 2013

This wonderful Cotes du Roussillon Blanc from Domaine LaFage is an amazing wine (vinum optimum pro pretio, if my Latin serves). The nose is textured with honey, white fruit such as pear, gooseberry and the entry is complex with more white fruit - acidic but balanced with sufficient viscosity and alcohol. Buy by the case. 91 points. Read More

  • Bayonette Cotes du Roussillon Villages 2011

Not a fruit forward wine but is made from nicely ripe fruit. There is a big splash of spiciness then ends very tannic. Softens some with air but remains tannic. Read More
