Minervois Wine
Minervois is an appellation in the Languedoc, in southern France. The most widespread grape variety is still Carignan, though others, such as Syrah, Grenache, Cinsaut, and Mourvedre, are beginning to take over. Indeed, Syrah and Mourvedre must now account for at least 20% of the blend for red Minervois. The enforced move away from Carignan, as well as advances in winemaking, have combined to make many of the wines great values. Some are downright excellent, yet most still sell for under $15.
White Minervois is made from Roussanne, Marsanne, Grenache Blanc, Bourboulenc, Vermentino, Rolle, and Maccabeo. A sweet white wine labeled Minervois Noble is also made, as well as some Vin Doux Naturel under the obscure appellation of Muscat de St-Jean-de-Minervois.
