Minervois Wine

Minervois is an appellation in the Languedoc, in southern France. The most widespread grape variety is still Carignan, though others, such as Syrah, Grenache, Cinsaut, and Mourvedre, are beginning to take over. Indeed, Syrah and Mourvedre must now account for at least 20% of the blend for red Minervois. The enforced move away from Carignan, as well as advances in winemaking, have combined to make many of the wines great values. Some are downright excellent, yet most still sell for under $15.

White Minervois is made from Roussanne, Marsanne, Grenache Blanc, Bourboulenc, Vermentino, Rolle, and Maccabeo. A sweet white wine labeled Minervois Noble is also made, as well as some Vin Doux Naturel under the obscure appellation of Muscat de St-Jean-de-Minervois.

Minervois on Snooth

  • Chateau de Serame Minervois 2007

    Snoothrank:

This well-respected Minervois comes from a good vintage - already aged to near perfection with a bouquet of sagebrush, cassis and (perhaps) garrigue. The nose is also slightly candied - as is the entry - which is smooth, and a little rustic with cranberry and black currant notes. The finish is ever so slightly bitter, but medium and pleasant. ... • Château du Donjon Minervois Rosé 2007

    Snoothrank:

Notwithstanding some complaints by friends about the scent of this wine, I find the nose quite enticing: the soft red fruit has camperis mushroom and bacon fat in the background plus some barnyard straw. On entry more mushroom and acidic wild red fruit (like pincherry); there is a slight acerbity on the finish common with Grenache (in my experi... Read More

  • Château du Donjon Minervois Rosé 2007

    Snoothrank:

The nose opened over time to show blackberry, dark currant, crisp bacon, ginger spice, herbes de Provence and a hint of citrus. On the palate it was full bodied with dark fruit tones hinting at blueberry and plum, along with dark earth, minerals and fig, which last through the finish, coating the palate with intense fruit extract and a hint of t... • Gerard Bertrand Syrah-Carignan Minervois 2008

    Snoothrank:

This 2008 - 50/50 Blend of Syrah and Carignan from Languedoc-Roussillon, France is very good. Deep ruby color with a tight rim variation. Fruit notes of blackberries, prune and black currents with a hint of pepper and slight minerality. It has a long finish on the palette with mid acidity. This wine has not peaked and will mature nicely over tim... Read More
