Minervois Wine

Minervois is an appellation in the Languedoc, in southern France. The most widespread grape variety is still Carignan, though others, such as Syrah, Grenache, Cinsaut, and Mourvedre, are beginning to take over. Indeed, Syrah and Mourvedre must now account for at least 20% of the blend for red Minervois. The enforced move away from Carignan, as well as advances in winemaking, have combined to make many of the wines great values. Some are downright excellent, yet most still sell for under $15.

White Minervois is made from Roussanne, Marsanne, Grenache Blanc, Bourboulenc, Vermentino, Rolle, and Maccabeo. A sweet white wine labeled Minervois Noble is also made, as well as some Vin Doux Naturel under the obscure appellation of Muscat de St-Jean-de-Minervois.

  • Chateau Villerambert-Julien Minervois 2002

This Red wine from Chateau Villerambert Julien, one of the relatively unknown jewels in the Minervois, is not only of great quality, but also great value. The nose is complex, with ripe blackberries and some cherry, a hint of tahiti vanilla and fresh tobacco, with underlying notes of herbs and soft, woody spices. The mouth is full-bodied and amu... • Chateau Vaissiere Minervois 2005

I was delighted when I tasted this subtle, warm and engaging, medium-bodied wine. It is not as stark and simple as a Cotes du Rhone, though in the character of the fruit, it resembles one, to a degree. I like it better; it seems more substantial. This will not earn 90 points on anyone's scale but it is welcoming and a good accompaniment to red... Read More

  • Château Massamier la Mignarde Minervois-la Livinière Domus Maximus 2001

First off, the nose keeps changing on me--strongly. It has the smokiness, which gave me distinct impressions of tobacco at first, then chocolate, then WOAH! coffee after I let it breathe a couple hours. I definitely prefer this one aerated. Both the fruit and the tannins calmed down tremendously, and now I get melon flavors rolling around my ton... Read More
