Minervois Wine

Minervois is an appellation in the Languedoc, in southern France. The most widespread grape variety is still Carignan, though others, such as Syrah, Grenache, Cinsaut, and Mourvedre, are beginning to take over. Indeed, Syrah and Mourvedre must now account for at least 20% of the blend for red Minervois. The enforced move away from Carignan, as well as advances in winemaking, have combined to make many of the wines great values. Some are downright excellent, yet most still sell for under $15.

White Minervois is made from Roussanne, Marsanne, Grenache Blanc, Bourboulenc, Vermentino, Rolle, and Maccabeo. A sweet white wine labeled Minervois Noble is also made, as well as some Vin Doux Naturel under the obscure appellation of Muscat de St-Jean-de-Minervois.

  • Had a very good Minervois over the last couple of nights Chateau Saint Jacques d'Alba  Minervois  2004 plenty of fruit, well structured tannins and a hint of pepper or spice ,another example of how the south-west of France is moving from quantity to quality in its wine.I still have a bottle of the 2009 vintage in my cupboard to look forward to. ... • Chateau Saint Jacques d'Albas Minervois 2004

I bought this bottle of wine as part of a lot on www.bidforwine.co.uk/auctions/show/56628 .The Minervois AOC was granted in 1985 for red, white and rose wines [though most are red ] in western Languedoc to the north of the Corbiere. Chateau Saint Jacques d'Albas is an ancient 180 acre property,40% of which is given over to vineyards that was bou... Read More

  • Chateau Maris Syrah la Touge 2010

Biodynamic 85% syrah, 15% grenache.A touch reduced on the nose with decidedly stinky base notes along with light and rather elegant floral perfumes all meeting over a core of leathery and slightly dried plum fruits. Just a bit thick on entry, this has plenty of fine grained tannins to help add volume and support the fruit in the mouth, though th... Read More

  • Chateau Millegrand Minervois 2010

I have never had a bottle from this Chateau so thought I would give it a try. It received a medal from the Concours Des Grands Vins De France and I usually enjoy many of the wines that compete there. This red is a blend of 35% Syrah, 30% Grenache, 25% Carignan, & 10% Mourvedre. Sounds interesting enough. A nice ruby red color in my glass and not... Read More

  • Had Dr. Oetker Pizza tonight, and paired with two wines; one from Minervois (Chateau Serame 2007), the other from north of Santa Barbara (Vina Robles).  Both are superb in terms of QPR; but I would recommend that those of you who can fiddle through the bins to look for 2009 Vina Robles Red 4.  That wine is an excellent candidate for a party, so ...
