Limoux Wine

Limoux is a town in the Pyrenean foothills. It is part of the Languedoc, but the terroir and the wines it produces are unlike any others in the region. Limoux is much cooler than nearby regions because of the extremely high elevation of the vineyards and the influence of the Atlantic. The ability of this climate to produce refreshing wines with bright acidity has led its residents to specialize in Blanquette de Limoux, the local sparkling wine. Some even claim that it was here, not in Champagne, that secondary fermentation in bottle was first practiced. The main grape variety is Mauzac, with a bit of Chardonnay and Chenin Blanc.

These sparkling wines are unique and a bit rustic -- lovely if one wants to try something different. Cremant de Limoux denotes a more polished style.

A little red, still Limoux is also made, with Merlot as the dominant grape variety.

Limoux on Snooth

  • Okay, I'm providing wine for my family (or I hope so, or I won't have ... a Cremant from Bourgogne or Limoux can be a good alternative at a great price. Good sparkling wine is a great match for food, but people just don't think that way. BTW, Vinho Verde can be light red, so it qualifies as both slightly sparkling and rose.  Woo-hoo!I'd mix it... • Grande Cuvee 1531 de Aimery Cremant de Limoux. Sieur d'Arques

    Snoothrank:

Read More

  • Tortoise Creek Pinot Noir les Oliviers 2011

    Snoothrank:

Oddly candied and herbal on the nose with sweet strawberry fruit paired with cinnamon red hot candies and bitter beet root and minty green accents. Low acid making this a bit round and plump in the mouth, though of modest scale with simple earthy plummy fruit and just a hint of the spicy cinnamon found on the nose. Smooth and very easy to drink ... Read More
