Limoux Wine

Limoux is a town in the Pyrenean foothills. It is part of the Languedoc, but the terroir and the wines it produces are unlike any others in the region. Limoux is much cooler than nearby regions because of the extremely high elevation of the vineyards and the influence of the Atlantic. The ability of this climate to produce refreshing wines with bright acidity has led its residents to specialize in Blanquette de Limoux, the local sparkling wine. Some even claim that it was here, not in Champagne, that secondary fermentation in bottle was first practiced. The main grape variety is Mauzac, with a bit of Chardonnay and Chenin Blanc.

These sparkling wines are unique and a bit rustic -- lovely if one wants to try something different. Cremant de Limoux denotes a more polished style.

A little red, still Limoux is also made, with Merlot as the dominant grape variety and also a little still white wine made of chardonnay, chenin blanc and mauzac.

Limoux on Snooth

  • Domaine Begude l'Etoile 2007

    Snoothrank:

I bought three bottles of this wine for £14 from the website ... They are from the Limoux appellation. This area has a long history of winemaking going back to... Read More

  • Calmel et Joseph Blanquette de Limoux Brut NV

    Snoothrank:

Although the Limoux region of Languedoc is riding on the legend that all sparklers originate here - including, of course, Champagne - it is a worthy wine in its own right; the Calmel et Joseph has excellent mousse which is long-lasting, with a nose of almond and pear; green apple peels linger on the palate for a satisfying finish. 88. • Had to suffer through too many mediocre wines tonight: an atrocious Nahe kerner ... 9% malbec, 11% syrah) from Limoux (Languedoc), 2012 Baron'Arques. Well drinkable tonight, and I did kill a bottle of it by myself while others were wasting their time in the weeds. Had that rustic Languedoc thing going on, which I like. Could tell Rothschild man...
