Made in the top region of Burgundy, the wine is a cuvée (blend) from several vineyards: Côte d'Or, Chalonnais, and Saint Vérand. One half of the wine is vinified and aged in oak barrels to give it that rich, buttery roundness, while the other half is made in stainless-steel tanks to retain the fruit flavors. Read moreWe've worked our way through a case of this delicious Chardonnay over the last 7 years or so, and just drank our final bottle at age 9. It is still drinking magnificently, though it's certainly fully mature and I wouldn't be inclined to age it further. Excellent lees-laden nose of spiced ripe pears, apples, toast, and a strong mineral component like wet gravel. Medium bodied with delicious white fruit flavors, and a very slightly grassy/melon touch like a top-notch Sauvignon Blanc. One of the best Macons I've ever tasted.    (hide)

Read moreGuffens-Heynen is the "home" estate of Jean-Marie Guffens, owner of the Verget operation that makes so many excellent and fairly-priced wines. The 2005 Macon-Pierreclos is a satisfying, round, harmonious Chardonnay displaying lots of yeast, browned butter, and roasted nut notes on top of a spicy roasted-apple-like core of fruit. There is a touch of pineapple and candied citrus fruit also, but the dominant sensory components are spice and lees as opposed to fruit. I would recommend drinking this wine in the next year or two as it seems fully soft and developed.    (hide)

Lovely in the mouth with solid acids supporting a broad fleshy yet fresh mouthfeel with a touch of vanilla and hint of fresh baking spice embedded in rich apple, citrus and subtly tropical fruit tones. This has it all, richness, a suave feel and freshness. This is youthful and will improve with a year or three in the bottle but finishes with excellent minerality and length with a great finale of ripe orchard fruits, lime oil and a hint of baked pie crust. 90pts    (hide)

Vibrant acidity keeps this taut and vivid in the mouth with a bit of a creamy, lemon curd mid-palate fleshing out as it airs. There’s a nice layer of melony fruit in the mouth and excellent length for a modest Macon. This is fresh and delicious showing just a whisper too much oak but so sapid and minerally it’s easy to overlook. 89pts    (hide)

  Light but bright apple nose. It's crisp with a hint of sweetness. A refreshing wine with the tiniest edge of spice, baked apples and pears.
