The Maconnais is the southernmost part of Burgundy, if you don’t count Beaujolais. It is best known for charming, not very expensive, usually unoaked Chardonnay, though the best wines from Pouilly-Fuisse and Vire-Clesse, among other appellations, can be world-class. A little red wine is made here, generally from Gamay, and it, too, can be fresh and delightful.

The most general appellation is Macon, followed by Macon-Villages. 43 villages are permitted to put their names on the label, and these wines generally offer a step up in quality. The best of these are great finds, because they are white Burgundies that one can actually afford to drink every day. Top Pouilly-Fuisse can be serious and ageworthy, but is still generally not very expensive.
