Mâconnais Wine

The Maconnais is the southernmost part of Burgundy, if you don’t count Beaujolais. It is best known for charming, not very expensive, usually unoaked Chardonnay, though the best wines from Pouilly-Fuisse and Vire-Clesse, among other appellations, can be world-class. A little red wine is made here, generally from Gamay, and it, too, can be fresh and delightful.

The most general appellation is Macon, followed by Macon-Villages. 43 villages are permitted to put their names on the label, and these wines generally offer a step up in quality. The best of these are great finds, because they are white Burgundies that one can actually afford to drink every day. Top Pouilly-Fuisse can be serious and ageworthy, but is still generally not very expensive.

  • Verget Macon-Vergisson la Roche 2008

Medium-bodied, with richly concentrated flavors of ripe apple, stone fruits, spice, and a touch of vanilla. The acidity is still quite refreshing - a very nice, affordable little white from Macon. Delicious with pork or a meaty white fish. Read More

  • Michel Picard Macon Villages Chardonnay 2009

First whiff brings some petrol on the nose. Somewhat light, a little flabby without much acidity or minerality that you'd expect from a white burgundy. Decent finish that has some flint, light lemon custard and a slight floral note. Not bad, not great. Read More

  • Macon-Pierreclos Domaine des Deux Roches 1997

I bought this bottle of wine from www.bidforwine.co.uk/auctions/show/28388.It is from the Maconnais, the southern part of Burgundy around the town of Macon. Domaine des Deux Roches is well known for its white wines but they also make this red from the pinot noir grape although gamay is also allowed under the AOC rules for the Maconnais.I drank my... • Antonin Rodet Mâcon-Villages 2009

Pouilly-Fuisse is a great region for those the love crisp, no oak Chardonnays and want to find some great values. Rodet's is very bright with a big granny-smith apple presence but also a nice nutty character toward the finish. Touches of minerals as well. All in all a nice, refreshing wine. Read More

  • Duboeuf Pouilly-Fuisse 2011

This is rather tight on the nose with green apple peels, a touch of fennel, hints of orange rind and a lovely chalky, floral note. On entry, this shows some of that orange peel flavor along with a nice, chalky edge. This then narrows down and shows impressive focus on the palate, delivering pure apple flavors with a subtle return of light orange... Read More
