Mâconnais Wine

The Maconnais is the southernmost part of Burgundy, if you don’t count Beaujolais. It is best known for charming, not very expensive, usually unoaked Chardonnay, though the best wines from Pouilly-Fuisse and Vire-Clesse, among other appellations, can be world-class. A little red wine is made here, generally from Gamay, and it, too, can be fresh and delightful.

The most general appellation is Macon, followed by Macon-Villages. 43 villages are permitted to put their names on the label, and these wines generally offer a step up in quality. The best of these are great finds, because they are white Burgundies that one can actually afford to drink every day. Top Pouilly-Fuisse can be serious and ageworthy, but is still generally not very expensive.

  • Georges Duboeuf Macon-Villages Domainles Chenevi 2011

Intense and oper fumed with herb stem, thistle, beet root aromas layered over a base of roasted raspberry fruit. Bright, crisp and rather transparent in the mouth this shows off some almost black raspberry fruit framed with softly toasty notes and a gentle earthiness. lue fruit aromas emerge on the backend along with some beet root notes all lea... • Georges Duboeuf Macon-Villages Domainles Chenevi 2011

Spicy and floral on the nose with plenty of herbal accents to the soft strawberry fruit. very broad and wide open in the mouth with raspberries and strawberries. Fruity and simple but fresh and with enough structure to remain firm in the mouth though this is a touch creamy at times. 85pts Read More

  • Domaine de la Soufrandise Mâcon-Fuissé le Ronté 2008

This Macon-Fuissé (a top village) at 5 years seemed a doubtful purchase, but the price was a charm (50% reduced), and the color seemed relatively youthful, so although the hew is deeper yellow, the nose is of ginger, baked apple with a certain flinty aspect; en bouche, there is apple pie, fruit compote and baking spice plus a clean, spring-water... • Clos du Chapitre Viré-Clessé 2008

A bright golden colour, this Macon wine has pear, butterscotch and a hint of lime on the nose with a quite dry, elegant entry. The palate receives muted pear, apple and diacetyl notes. Finish is medium and just a touch warm. A very decent Burgundian Chardonnay at its peak (or just beyond it). Drink up. 87 points. Read More
