Mâconnais Wine

The Maconnais is the southernmost part of Burgundy, if you don’t count Beaujolais. It is best known for charming, not very expensive, usually unoaked Chardonnay, though the best wines from Pouilly-Fuisse and Vire-Clesse, among other appellations, can be world-class. A little red wine is made here, generally from Gamay, and it, too, can be fresh and delightful.

The most general appellation is Macon, followed by Macon-Villages. 43 villages are permitted to put their names on the label, and these wines generally offer a step up in quality. The best of these are great finds, because they are white Burgundies that one can actually afford to drink every day. Top Pouilly-Fuisse can be serious and ageworthy, but is still generally not very expensive.

  • Domaine Ja Ferret Pouilly-Fuissé Tournant de Pouilly 2012

This is a wine that benefits from some time. Its neither easy nor is it tough, yet it is entirely obvious. This is partially due to the fact it is on a sheer limestone soil. Whatever the viticultural aspects, the wine is vinous yet robust and hence perplexingly compelling. 92 pts Read More

  • J. A. Ferret Pouilly-Fuisse les Menetrieres 2012

This mid-slope vineyard faces directly east. It has a rather rich, yet well-drained, soil, that endows the wine with a nice split between structure and ripeness. Theres wild peach and plenty of apricot in this wine to make it rather gulpable. 92 pts Read More

  • Domaine Ja Ferret Pouilly-Fuissé Clos des Prouges 2012

This is a white that demands some time. Its impressively concentrated, so its still far from being exuberant in unleashing its full-fledged flavor. Not only is the spice-laced white fruit pristine-clean, it also finishes very long. 92 pts Read More

  • Lafon Vire-Clesse 2012

If a Viré-Clessé can live over a decade and do it well, youd better believe this will be the one. The chalkiness of this wine is startling yet invigorating. The wine exudes citrus peel, oyster shell, flint and almond skin. Despite all these lean elements, theres a nicely juicy core to give the whole good balance. 92 pts Read More

  • Domaine Guffens-Heynen Mâcon-Pierreclos Tri de Chavigne 2013

This wine is so brightly clear and reflective that you almost need sunglasses to peer into it. It is most impressively in aromatic clarity, deep concentration and lingering finish. Barely in the bottle yet ready to please, this wine can nonetheless run for a good decade. 92 pts Read More
