Mâconnais Wine

The Maconnais is the southernmost part of Burgundy, if you don’t count Beaujolais. It is best known for charming, not very expensive, usually unoaked Chardonnay, though the best wines from Pouilly-Fuisse and Vire-Clesse, among other appellations, can be world-class. A little red wine is made here, generally from Gamay, and it, too, can be fresh and delightful.

The most general appellation is Macon, followed by Macon-Villages. 43 villages are permitted to put their names on the label, and these wines generally offer a step up in quality. The best of these are great finds, because they are white Burgundies that one can actually afford to drink every day. Top Pouilly-Fuisse can be serious and ageworthy, but is still generally not very expensive.

Pretty plain - but does what it says on the tin! Its crisp, decent acidity, some oak, but its pretty lacking in flavor and is very plain and neutral. Paired with shrimp pasta in garlic sauce well, Read More

possibly one of the worst wine experiences I have ever had. All i get is sour sour granny smith apple (and not in a good way) and one of the most awkward disjointed finishes ever. zero oak here and maybe they should have overoaked it cause this stuff is baaaaaad. Read More

  • Domaine Fichet Mâcon-Igé Château London 2004

I loved this wine, both 2004 and 2005. Bought every case available in my area when I realized how good it was for such a great price and how short lived that experience would be: have never seen it since. It was my house white b/c we entertain frequently and this wine tasted twice as much as it cost if not more. This wine was wonderful, even a... Read More

  • Domaine des Gandines Viré Clessé Élevé En Futs de Chéne 2005

Rich golden colour, with a fairly subtle nose of camomile, mint and citrus -- smells like a summer meadow! Initially tropical in the mouth, with melon-ish notes, red apple, citrus, and then some herbal hints -- sage and grass. Full bodied, with excellent length and perfectly integrated acidity, this is a little joy of a wine from Burgundy's perf... Read More

  • Jacques Charlet Viré-Clessé 2007

It is indeed gold in colour with green hints -- also seems to have a quite oily, not quite crystal clear look in the glass. Big, seductive chardonnay nose of green apple, citrus, pine resin, peaches lurking underneath, and at the bottom a fullness of asparagus and grassy, earthy notes. Much more bracing and challenging on the palate than, say, a... Read More
