Mâconnais Wine

The Maconnais is the southernmost part of Burgundy, if you don’t count Beaujolais. It is best known for charming, not very expensive, usually unoaked Chardonnay, though the best wines from Pouilly-Fuisse and Vire-Clesse, among other appellations, can be world-class. A little red wine is made here, generally from Gamay, and it, too, can be fresh and delightful.

The most general appellation is Macon, followed by Macon-Villages. 43 villages are permitted to put their names on the label, and these wines generally offer a step up in quality. The best of these are great finds, because they are white Burgundies that one can actually afford to drink every day. Top Pouilly-Fuisse can be serious and ageworthy, but is still generally not very expensive.

  • Fabrice Larochette Pouilly-Fuisse Clos de Monsieur Noly 2008

A nose of various Flowers and some lemon zest. On the palate an immediate freshness dotted with hints of lemon and grapefruit in perfect harmony. The finish doesn't linger. However, this wine has backbone and stands its ground with moderately spicy food. This is a well crafted wine. Read More

  • Château de la Greffière Mâcon-la Roche Vineuse Vieilles Vignes 2011

Very nice French chardonnay. A little less complex, less flinty and less minerally than the '10 with subtle floral notes on a well balanced frame of white stone fruit and honeysuckle. Read More

  • Nicolas Potel Mâconvillages Blanc 2010

Youll immediately notice that the Mâcon-Villages Blanc lacks the manifest fruitiness of American Chardonnays, and whites in general. Potel has crafted a simple nose featuring notes of fresh honey and roasted almonds. It crosses the palate containing traces of limestone and chalk from the minerality of Burgundys soil, which brings a freshness tha... Read More

  • La Soufrandière Mâcon-Vinzelles le Clos de Grand-Pere 2010

In our search for that elusive, perfect white, this one is not quite it, but it's good. Very good. We enjoyed this white burgundy at our own table with homemade fava bean agnolotti in a curry emulsion. The winery describes the wine as "citrussy mineral nose and balance, complexity and richness in the mouth." Read More
