A winery/castle floats in a sea of vines that are divided among many small owners. After visiting the tasting room of one of the larger owners, and enjoying the gustatory delights of the fruit grown just outside that door, I hit the road in search of a meal. Just up the road I noticed a short grizzled unshaven old man in a flannel shirt in a rickety old chair beside a barrel that was standing on end. On the head of the barrel was an open bottle, a single wine glass, and a sign: "Degustation." Tasting. "This winemaker with the famous grapes had an unfamous name, but the wine was marvelous, better than the more famous vigneron from which I had just come, and I bought a bottle for about $20. "I drove my rental Renault north seeking sustenance. I noticed a trailer, not much bigger than a minivan, parked beside the road. As I sped past I could smell them. Saucisse, French hot dogs, and pommes frites. French fries. I wheeled around and drove back. The trailer had a window with an awning, and a shelf for passing through the hot food. Fast food, French country style. "I was second in line behind a short grizzled unshaven old man in a flannel shirt. Through an open window in the trailer another short grizzled unshaven old man in a flannel shirt was mounting a freshly shaven potato into a grid of metal blades. He pulled down a handle and pushed the potato through a grid of blades extruding it into a bouquet of quarter inch shoestrings and propelling them directly into a cauldron of hot oil. Gurrrrrrglllllle. Hisssssss. "He then produced a long skinny baguette of crusty bread, cut off a 8" section, and impaled it lengthwise on a stainless steel hot poker, about the diameter of a fat finger. It went right up the center of the soft white bread, and toasted it golden. "He then turned around and with his bare fingers plucked a white sausage from a griddle. Holding it between thumb and forefinger he dipped it in a widemouth jar of mustard made just up the road in Dijon. He then wriggled the dog lubed with mustard into the holey bread, scooped out the frites, wrapped them all in brown butcher paper, and handed it the man in front of me. I ordered what he had. "Moments later I found myself sitting on a stone wall overlooking the great Chateau in Clos Vougeot, eating the world's best hot dog and fries made just over there, and drinking nectar from the neck of the bottle, made from the vines at my feet." ====== Sake goes extremely well with a number of tofu (yu-dofu, yuba sashimi, tofu stirfries a la chinoise, etc.) and poultry (yakitori, etc.) and vegetable dishes. It handles wasabi and soy sauce a helluvalot better than any wine I've drunk. It's not just for seafood, as someone was complaining in another thread. Grilled chicken and vegetables on a stick with sake under the railroad tracks with friends in Tokyo usually provides me with more pleasure than a good dog and beer at a ballgame in LA or NYC, though I think the writer/artist from Chicago who posted from Burgundy might have found something pretty good, too... ;-    (hide)

Read moreDecided to go with some wine education for my CaliCab-loving friend. Started ... a 2000 Domaine René Engel Clos Vougeot. I chose the Engel over some other CV options because I figured it would be bigger, even in a not-totally-solid vintage, and thus closer to what I knew he was comfortable with. Think I persuaded him there are good wines being made outside California, and good varietals beyond Cab. Also made me think I want to do a comparative tasting between some '93s and other René Engel, Anne Gros and Meo-Camuzet Clos Vougeots I have sitting around. The '53 Romoissenet can wait for another occasion, though...    (hide)

  NIce to see there are some Burgundy fans out there. Well, Burgundy is divided in 5 parts, you have Mâcon, Côte Chalonnaise, Côte de Beaune, Côte de Nuits and Chablis. Mâcon produces some great whites like Pouilly Fuissé and Pouilly Fumé. You don't want to miss one of these...... Read moreNIce to see there are some Burgundy fans out there. Well, Burgundy is divided in 5 parts, you have Mâcon, Côte Chalonnaise, Côte de Beaune, Côte de Nuits and Chablis. Mâcon produces some great whites like Pouilly Fuissé and Pouilly Fumé. You don't want to miss one of these... Chablis also produces some delicious whites! Côte Chalonnaise has some good reds en whites but quite sour and bitter of taste altough the whites from Rully tend to be very soft. Above the Côte Chalonnaise you have the Côte de Beaune. These wines are really superb. Very flavourful wines here. Over here if you ever get the chance you should taste wines from "Hospices de Beaune". Another sublime wine here is Savigny-Les-Beaune. And finally the cream of the crop, you have the Côte de Nuits. Here you can find the world famous domaine de la Romanée Conti. Reds are superb here, super flavour and great aftertaste for these wines. The Grand Cru's are amazing, but quite expensive. Definitely to try are Chambertin, Clos de Vougeot, Musigny, Bonnes Mares and Clos de la Roche... Cheers.......!    (hide)

  Good eve, Should be a good bottle with potential. Bouchard is a good house. I still have a 1988 "Clos de La Roche" Grand Cru from Joseph Drouhin in my cellar and it's superb. Your friend will definitely be happy!

It has been stored in a basement cellar on its side, turned periodically. There is a small amount of sediment. My wife and I bought the bottle in France back in 1994 while touring around after we were married. We purchased it early in the trip thinking we would open it on a hillside overlooking some small provincial town while listening to the church bells ring throughout the valley. Turns out the itinerary my wife planned did not allow for that, so we lugged it around. dmcker - I am very encouraged by your experiences and got a good chuckle about drinking rather then selling. Thanks. Max - perfect! The price you suggest is what I thought it might be worth. Thanks I thought about drinking it but am now likely to give it as a gift to a new friend that loaned my family an incredible cottage for a week over Christmas. He is into wine, and cigars and has absolutely everything a cottage could want or ask for. I figure this bottle would be pretty unique, along with a box of Cohiba cigars. Read moreClos Vougeot is a locale from which I've had many pleasurable wines. First off, I'll suggest that you plan to drink it rather than sell it. I still have a 1953 from Remoissenet that I'm trying to figure the right occasion on which to drink. That wine, however, I know the provenance of, from winery to the cellar in which it's currently stored. Based on other 1953s I've had this past decade I'm fairly confident it will be plenty healthy to enjoy. One big question regarding your 1988 is how has it been stored all this while? Please let us know what you know about that...    (hide)
