Bâtard Montrachet is one of the most famous Chardonnay-only Grand Cru vineyards in the Côte de Beaune region of France. It lies right below the distinguished Montrachet vineyard, between Puligny and Chassagne. The name derives from the Medieval legend that when the lord of Puligny divided his land between his children, the vineyard plots were named for their titles. Thus the eldest son, the “chevalier,” the daughters (the maidens, the “pucelles”) and the bastard son (“bâtard”). The vineyard lies on a medium gradient slope, but with excellent sun exposure and a mixture of clay, silt and limestone soils. The vines have deep-digging roots and good drainage. What all this means is that the Chardonnay grown here are exceptionally balanced with delicate fruit and acidity. But it’s a fragmented thing, covering a mere 12 hectares spread among about 15 owners. These wines come highly prized and have done for centuries.
