Cote d’Or

Home to the most famous wines in Burgundy, the Cote d’Or is a narrow strip of land situated on a fault line, which giving it enormous geological diversity. All of Burgundy’s Grands Crus (except for those in Chablis) are located here. The Cote de Nuits is the most northerly part of the Cote d’Or. It contains mostly red Grands Crus. The Cote de Beaune is to the south. Most of its Grands Crus are white.

The Cote d’Or is an east-facing escarpment, providing ideal exposure for the vines. Typically, the best wines are found in the middle of the slope. The fertile plain at the hillside’s base produces wines that carry a basic Bourgogne appellation. As the ground starts to slope, improving drainage, one finds village-level wines. Higher on the slope, on poorer, stonier topsoil, are the Premier Cru and Grand Cru vineyards.

  • Besserat de Bellefon Cuvée des Moines Blanc de Blanc Brut Sparkling Wine Champagne

    Snoothrank:

Lemon cream, peach and green apple fruit notes with a classic vanilla biscuit layer permeating and notes of raw bread dough. This has a soft mousse and good fresh fruit notes of lemon and grapefruit on the palate, tart acidity towards the back palate with golden berries and more apple notes finally finishing with some spice and more yeasty cream. • For the price, the MacMurray is pretty good and varietally correct.  Castle Rock has made a business of buying other people's PN juice and packaging it at very low prices, but it's too hit and miss to be worth buying.  Calera's Central Coast bottle is pretty reasonable, although Josh Jensen told me he is not happy that it's nearly all Dijon clon...
