Cote d’Or

Home to the most famous wines in Burgundy, the Cote d’Or is a narrow strip of land situated on a fault line, which giving it enormous geological diversity. All of Burgundy’s Grands Crus (except for those in Chablis) are located here. The Cote de Nuits is the most northerly part of the Cote d’Or. It contains mostly red Grands Crus. The Cote de Beaune is to the south. Most of its Grands Crus are white.

The Cote d’Or is an east-facing escarpment, providing ideal exposure for the vines. Typically, the best wines are found in the middle of the slope. The fertile plain at the hillside’s base produces wines that carry a basic Bourgogne appellation. As the ground starts to slope, improving drainage, one finds village-level wines. Higher on the slope, on poorer, stonier topsoil, are the Premier Cru and Grand Cru vineyards.

Clearly barrel fermented in oak. The wine is dry, with medium acid, med+ body. The wine has undergone malolactic fermentation, has evidence of lees contact. ... Read More

  • I've tasted an entry level Turgy product and really liked it for the money. The best vintage bubbly recently was a 2002 Piper Heidsieck "Rare" blanc de blancs.  It was the most laser-like Champagne I've had in a long time as far as balance and intensity of fruit are concerned. As it warmed in the glass a generous array of stone fruits emerged wi... Read More

  • Stonestreet Terrace Ridge 2011

    Snoothrank:

62% Semillon, 38% Sauvignon BlancHugely aromatic with intense floral framed notes of spiced, dried lemons draped over melon, dried peach and grapefruit aromas. A little soft on entry and smaller scaled in the mouth than the nose suggest. This delivers rather vibrant and taut melon, apricot and grapefruit flavors with a nice gooseberry accent to ...
