Cote d’Or

Home to the most famous wines in Burgundy, the Cote d’Or is a narrow strip of land situated on a fault line, which giving it enormous geological diversity. All of Burgundy’s Grands Crus (except for those in Chablis) are located here. The Cote de Nuits is the most northerly part of the Cote d’Or. It contains mostly red Grands Crus. The Cote de Beaune is to the south. Most of its Grands Crus are white.

The Cote d’Or is an east-facing escarpment, providing ideal exposure for the vines. Typically, the best wines are found in the middle of the slope. The fertile plain at the hillside’s base produces wines that carry a basic Bourgogne appellation. As the ground starts to slope, improving drainage, one finds village-level wines. Higher on the slope, on poorer, stonier topsoil, are the Premier Cru and Grand Cru vineyards.

Côte d'Or on Snooth

  • Domaine Besancenot Beaune Premier Cru Bressandes 1997

    Snoothrank:

A real show-stopper wine! The first flash on the palate is strong and fruity, a burst like fire in the grate. It evolves into a warm, constant amber glow, a happier milder smoldering. Intense but restrained. You can taste the earthiness of the wine, here, like the embers of a fire it's the base at the heart of the wine, but the wine still bui... Read More

  • Domaine Besancenot Beaune Premier Cru Greves 2010

    Snoothrank:

The power and age of this wine dwarfs you like walking through a redwood forest. You can feel the history around you, until its not just the scent or taste of the forest, its as if youve become part of the forest yourself. The smell and taste encompasses you.On the nose, its woody and subtle, like fruit descending into forest greens. On the pal... Read More

  • Domaine Xavier Durand Corton Grand Cru Rognet 2010

    Snoothrank:

A rich mahogany smell, like picking up an antique violin. Hints of fruit on the nose.Complex and beautiful on the palate. The bit of fruit we encountered on the nose steps forwards and takes center stage, like a ballerina showing off her skill. Its dance is subtle and enchanting, changing as it dances across the tongue first dark fruit, then... Read More

  • Joseph Drouhin Santenay 2010

    Snoothrank:

Had this at a Dinner at Capital Grille in Dallas. A bit disappointing, seemed too young to drink now. Very bright, loads of tannins and high acidity. Hoped for something a bit softer to begin the meal. Bright with slightly under ripe fruit with little to balance the fruit. Underwhelming particularly at the Restaurant price point. Read More

  • Burgundy is a lot bigger when you add in the Maconnais, Chablis, Beaujolais.  But no one is collecting those and then cashing in at auction, save for a few top-end Chablis.  It's the Cote d'Or that folks collect, and it's long enough, but it's even narrower than the Napa Valley.  And only a little of it is grown on--not like Napa where they plan... • I got that email and was tempted to post it here, so good on David for doing it.  What caught my eye is how HDH is doing ever more business auctioning Burgundy wines.  In fact, I looked at their annual report for last year and DRC was their biggest money maker.  Which kind of amazed me, because DRC just doesn't make a whole lot of wine--they onl...
