Cote d’Or

Home to the most famous wines in Burgundy, the Cote d’Or is a narrow strip of land situated on a fault line, which giving it enormous geological diversity. All of Burgundy’s Grands Crus (except for those in Chablis) are located here. The Cote de Nuits is the most northerly part of the Cote d’Or. It contains mostly red Grands Crus. The Cote de Beaune is to the south. Most of its Grands Crus are white.

The Cote d’Or is an east-facing escarpment, providing ideal exposure for the vines. Typically, the best wines are found in the middle of the slope. The fertile plain at the hillside’s base produces wines that carry a basic Bourgogne appellation. As the ground starts to slope, improving drainage, one finds village-level wines. Higher on the slope, on poorer, stonier topsoil, are the Premier Cru and Grand Cru vineyards.

  • Calling back to your indirect shot at Pinot Noir Mark, I think it's great that you've tried and tried different CA examples, but you really need to try a few good red burgundies before joining Greg and his opinion. In fact, I think his opinion on Pinot Noir is overplayed for effect, and better understood if you get the full picture, which I'll a... Read More

  • LuckyLucy, let me also welcome you to Snooth!  If you're looking for "black cherry, milk chocolate, earthy & even smoky notes that's not so tannic" I'd suggest an older southern Rhone. Many of the grenache, syrah, mourvedre blends have loads of dark cherry and earth, but may be a bit on the tannic side when young. Châteauneuf-du-Pape (a bit pric... Read More
