Cote d’Or
Home to the most famous wines in Burgundy, the Cote d’Or is a narrow strip of land situated on a fault line, which giving it enormous geological diversity. All of Burgundy’s Grands Crus (except for those in Chablis) are located here. The Cote de Nuits is the most northerly part of the Cote d’Or. It contains mostly red Grands Crus. The Cote de Beaune is to the south. Most of its Grands Crus are white.
The Cote d’Or is an east-facing escarpment, providing ideal exposure for the vines. Typically, the best wines are found in the middle of the slope. The fertile plain at the hillside’s base produces wines that carry a basic Bourgogne appellation. As the ground starts to slope, improving drainage, one finds village-level wines. Higher on the slope, on poorer, stonier topsoil, are the Premier Cru and Grand Cru vineyards.
