Cote d’Or

Home to the most famous wines in Burgundy, the Cote d’Or is a narrow strip of land situated on a fault line, which giving it enormous geological diversity. All of Burgundy’s Grands Crus (except for those in Chablis) are located here. The Cote de Nuits is the most northerly part of the Cote d’Or. It contains mostly red Grands Crus. The Cote de Beaune is to the south. Most of its Grands Crus are white.

The Cote d’Or is an east-facing escarpment, providing ideal exposure for the vines. Typically, the best wines are found in the middle of the slope. The fertile plain at the hillside’s base produces wines that carry a basic Bourgogne appellation. As the ground starts to slope, improving drainage, one finds village-level wines. Higher on the slope, on poorer, stonier topsoil, are the Premier Cru and Grand Cru vineyards.

  • Bouchard Père et Fils Pinot Noir Clos Vougeot Grand Cru 1985

Nice bottle sweetness and limestone minerality here with a gamy, smoky edge to the fading fruit. Very friendly in the mouth with nice freshness and fine balance. Gently sweet and still surprisingly vibrant. A pleasant surprise 88pts Read More

  • Bouchard Père et Fils Clos Vougeot Grand Cru 1996

Sweet and sappy on the nose with very spicy fruit. Still a bit rigid in the mouth with good acids and just a touch of tannin sticking out. Still youthful but not particularly exciting. 87pts Read More

  • Domaine Georges Roumier Chambolle-Musigny Premiere Cru les Cras 2000

A bit smoky and stemmy on the nose and note particularly ripe but with good fruit and flinty, gunsmoke minerality. Nice and bright in the mouth with acid driven length and adequate sour, wild berry fruits. 86pts Read More

  • Nuits St Georges Premier Cru les Poisets Arnoux 2005

Powerfully aromatic with smoky, nutty tones over dark fruit. the oak tones continue to grow here with clove oil and coffee popping out with airing but the tarry, dark black cherry puts up a valiant struggle eventually gaining parity with the baking spices and vanilla. In the mouth this is big and soft with mineral cut and bitter licorice tones c... Read More

  • Clos des Lambrays 2005

Very floral and sweet on the nose with cherry, mint and a light medicinal character that continues to gain sweetness in the glass and has great complexity revealing deep soil spice tones and a lovely violet pastille top note. In the mouth this is soft and rich and packed with sweet fruit that has a melony freshness to it. Deep, dark mineral tone... Read More

  • Domaine Faiveley Gevrey Chambertin Premiere Cri la Combe Aux Moines 2005

Sallow and tight on the nose this never really opened though I was able to coax some woodsy notes and a touch of roast meat over the brooding, spicy dusty fruit. A bit innocuous and extracted in the mouth with big acids and tannins but the fruit seem small and shallow. Fine mineral cut and a great dose of Gevrey dirt on the finish are promising ... Read More

  • Comte Senard Aloxe-Corton 2005

Very pale and delicate looking. This is a lovely glass with a very gentle character full of stemmy fruit, limestone and mineral tones of top notes of grapevine smoke and dusty yet precise strawberry fruit. Sweet and elegant in the mouth with herbal tones adding background contrast to the light raspberry fruit. Finishes with good length and depth... Read More

  • Domaine Robert Chevillon Nuits St. Georges les Chaignots Premiere Cru 2005

Decidedly oaky at first with sweet backing spices and chocolate framing plump, chunky fruit and deep earth tones. Soft in the mouth with toughish tannins supporting excellent dark fruit notes though the bitter, drying tannins keep this a bit short and clumsy. Very middle of the road style 88pts Read More

  • Domaine Ponsot Gevrey Chambertin Cuvee de Labeille 2005

Sappy and pure with vibrantly bright sweet red raspberry fruit tones and nuanced notes of animal, musk, white pepper and minerals. The acidity is front and center here offering intense cur but keeping the wine lithe and lively in the mouth. Big with rich fruit, crisp cut red plums, candied red apple, and ripe raspberry fill the mouth. Some black... Read More
