Read moreFor an older white that hadn't been kept cool and was on clearance for $6, I thought "Either this will be great or crap but worth a $6 gamble." The cork was saturated and the nose was a bit like gym socks, but surprisingly, the rich full flavor of a great white Burgundy came through with a few swirls in the glass. Obviously if you find one like this, it's a risk, but if cheap enough, one worth taking. I ran back and bought the rest of the bottles.    (hide)

  Verget Corton Charlemagne Vielles Vignes 2005

  Not a fan. Lots of minerality, with a smoky, burnt ash finish. Very thin and weak on the palate. Not oaky or buttery at all. I wouldn't call this a grand cru. Similiar to the overrated Louis Jadot CC.

Sadly ...-charlemagne-grand-cru-1996/ There was also a really disappointing over-the-hill 1976 Ruchottes-Chambertin Grand Cru somewhere along the way. If anyone out there still has any 1970s wines out there, there is no excuse not to drink them in 2009. I can't think of anything (besides 1977 vintage port) that isn't dying a slow death in the cellars by now. Now I am back at home and it is time to resume drinking "normal" wines    (hide)

Read moreCarolus Magnus where have you gone? Is this wine really worthy of its imperial title? I know that 1996 was the best vintage for white Burgundy since the dissolution of the Warsaw Pact, but this particular bottle (a half bottle, at that) was no show-stopper. To contrast with Allen Meadows's review, this wine was not stunning, wonderfully complex or extremely pretty. It was a very workable white Burgundy with balance and a touch of elegance, but none of the raw power expected from a Grand Cru wine. Honestly, its touch of minerality would have had me thinking "this is a good white Beaune wine" in a blind tasting. Now perhaps this disappointment is the result of this being a half bottle, but the wine wasn't showing serious signs of aging or oxidation. Maybe, however, the outside of the bottle, with the label torn and mangled like it had been in a railway accident, holds the answer here; this bottle could have had a rough life in the cellar and pantry. This review applies to a half bottle.    (hide)

Comte Senard Corton en Charlemagne my 4th, groups 5th with 48 points Displaying an absolutely delicate color in the glass this was the only wine tonight that could be called ready. Very expressive with a layered, classic array of flavors, this kept evolving through the evening. http://www.snooth.com/wine/corton-en-charlemagne-comte-senard-2005/ Faiveley Gevrey Chambertin Craipillots my 6th, groups 8th with 66 points This struck me as the most closed wine of the night so I'm not surprised with it's showing. This really had it all, depth, power, balance. It is very youthful still but it was universally admired.
