Morgon is an appellation created in 1936, although there has been viticulture here for centuries, for red wines from the commune of Villie-Morgon.This is located about 10 miles south of the town of Macon. It is one of the crus of Beaujolais. Like the other crus, it’s located in the hilly vineyards of northern Beaujolais and made of the gamay grape.Gamay is a cross between pinot noir and an ancient grape called gouais The area produces dense, long-lived wines that can approach the quality of red Burgundy. An especially excellent vineyard in Morgon is the Cote de Py.
