Chenas is an appellation for red wines created in 1936 [although viticulture here goes back to at least the Romans ] from the two communes of Chenas and Chapelle de Guinchay about 10 miles south of the town of Macon. It is the smallest,at only 260 hectares under vine of the 'cru' Beaujolais appellations The name comes from the oak [;'chene' in French] forests which once covered these granite hills.Like all Beaujolais it is made from the gamay grape,a cross between pinot noir and a white grape called ;gouais' introduced by the Romans

  • I forgot to mention this bottle. I had it before the Chenas. It's wonderful!Above average Gamay. Perhaps a bit livelier than other Beaujolais with more intense red cherry and blackberry. Smooth and refined tannins with medium acidity. Evolved well after a couple hours of decanting. So very indicative of usual Gamay characteristics but more rich a... Read More

  • 2010 ChenasCave Saint Cyr.A bit overpriced at $29.99 for what you get. Just another typical Beaujolais but a bit of plumb goes along for the ride with strawberry and raspberry. Mild floral notes of old red rose. Medium-low bodied wine with simple red fruit and berry. Could not find the oak or spice aside from a touch of maybe clove. Short finish... Read More
