Brouilly Wine

Brouilly is an appellation created in 1938,although viticulture here goes back to at least the Romans, for red wines from six communes around the extinct volcano of Mount Brouilly some 20 miles south of the town of Macon.Cotes de Brouilly refers to a smaller area on the upper slopes and both appellations are 'cru Beaujolais' and like all Beaujolais made of the gamay grape. Gamay is a cross between pinot noir and an ancient grape called 'gouais' Brouilly is the largest of the crus of Beaujolais. Like the others, it is located on the high-quality vineyard land in the hilly, northern part of the region. It produces comparatively robust, richly textured wines, the best of which can improve for years in bottle.

  • Chateau des Tours Brouilly 2008

Unsure how long it'd been open, but the nose and appearance made it seem much older than a 2008. Lots of dried leaves and earth, mushroom and coffee. The flavors follow suit. Lots of dried berry fruit. I tasted this blind and knew I tasted grenache. It's a very tasty, earthy CDR. I'd recommend lots of decanting or breathing time, allowing ... Read More

  • Mommessin Brouilly Chateau de Pierreux 2009

Robe of deep, coagulated blood. Raspberries (Frambois) and a hint of mint and chocolate on the nose but muted at serving temperature of 12 degrees centigrade (perhaps too cool for Cru). A bit vegetative - almost rhubarb on the palate but very pleasant. Medium finish and good value. Read More

  • Chanrion Côte de Brouilly 2010

Deep and intense with crushed berries, mineral soil, this is lovely on the nose with deep fruit and bright aromatics, light on entry, good depth, this is really vibrant in the mouth, juicy acids, ripe tannins, bright with a restrained fruitiness, very fruit driven but with cut and wonderful focus. A touch of blueberry, and lovely tannins that e... Read More

"Flat", says Candace.I prefer the word 'dusty'. In fact, I'd argue, this is a ... the Land from which it Came.Brouilly is not far from the Windmills, but not far is not even close when it comes to Wine Regions and Terroir; still, that does not stop Brouilly from wanting so badly to be thought of as King.Terroir is afterally, not solely a ref...
