Brouilly Wine


Brouilly is an appellation created in 1938,although viticulture here goes back to at least the Romans, for red wines from six communes around the extinct volcano of Mount Brouilly some 20 miles south of the town of Macon.Cotes de Brouilly refers to a smaller area on the upper slopes and both appellations are 'cru Beaujolais' and like all Beaujolais made of the gamay grape. Gamay is a cross between pinot noir and an ancient grape called 'gouais' Brouilly is the largest of the crus of Beaujolais. Like the others, it is located on the high-quality vineyard land in the hilly, northern part of the region. It produces comparatively robust, richly textured wines, the best of which can improve for years in bottle.
