Beaujolais Nouveau is a style of young, fresh wine produced in the Beaujolais region, adjacent to Burgundy, France. Every year, these are released on the third Thursday of November, with much fanfare that “Les Beaujolais Nouveau est arrivé!!!” What began as a local tradition in the 19th century, made popular in Parisian cafés in the 1950s, has become an actual race for worldwide distribution. Every method of transportation imaginable has been used to ensure arrival by midnight of that Thursday (to release any time before is strictly prohibited), and its many fans can open a fresh bottle that very day. This style accounts for nearly half the entire region’s annual output.

To get technical, this a primeur style of wine, which simply means that it is released between its harvest date and the following spring. It’s not uncommon in other parts of the world, but Beaujolais Nouveau is the most popular and sought after. But isn’t wine supposed to age a bit Read more »

  • Georges Duboeuf Beaujolais Nouveau Burgundy 2009

As far as a nouveau goes, this one is nice. Not too young or pungent, but nicely balanced and of course brightly colored and very forward style. Read More

  • Mommessin Beaujolais Nouveau 2009

Appearance in the glass very dark and reminiscent of the splendid 2009 vintage - reputed to be the best in 50 years. The depth of black fruit and cultivated violet flowers on the nose is impressive for a new wine. Nice candy-floss and blackberry flavors that just begin to intrigue the palate but then disappear in a typically short finish. If t... Read More

  • Georges Duboeuf Beaujolais Nouveau Burgundy 2009

Served slightly chilled. Clear purple in the glass. Straight to the point Beaujolais Nouveau with cherry and berry flavors and the characteristic banana overtones. Bright acidity. Light body. This isn't an overly complex wine but in all fairness, it isn't supposed to be. Simple and enjoyable. Read More

Transparent, bright purple-red in the glass. This wine is pretty simple and straightforward with notes of banana, cherries, and other red berries. Light-bodied with very bright acidity. Read More

  • So naturally what I mean by that title is,that much, if not most, of the wine ... by the phenomenon that is Beaujolais Nouveau. The marketing concept of producing wines in a blaze of forced glory, and using techniques that make the wine a shadow of it's self, has propelled this particular wine to the tops of recognition, if the bottom of appre... • Georges Duboeuf Beaujolais Nouveau 2006

This review is a little unfair for this wine. I saw this special cuvée along ... price of two for $9. Being a Beaujolais Nouveau from 2006 and trying it in 2009, this one is a little past its prime. Still noted hints of residual fruitiness and red berry. I think it would be quite a nice Nouveau if tried at the right time. Needless to say if yo... Read More

  • It seems Boisset just won an award for inovative packaging for their PET bottle for Beaujolais Nouveau...I tried their B.N. in late January. I have to say it was the first time in my 53 years I have spat out a sip in disgust. It was thin, sour and tarry. I contacted them and they swore that it wasn't their new bottle. They said they imediately ... Read More

  • Labouré-Roi Beaujolais Nouveau 2008

Last Nouveau I will probably try from 2008. I really enjoyed this one. Deep purple color. Medium bodied with hints of tropical fruit (banana) and red berry, possibly strawberry or raspberry. I chilled it for about 20 minutes prior to tasting and the real fruit flavors didn't come up until it warmed up. Finish was pleasant but very abrupt. Also l... Read More
