Saint-Julien is a commune in the Medoc region of Bordeaux. It is located just south of Pauillac. The wines are made mostly from Cabernet Sauvignon. Because it has no First Growths, it is often underrated and a source of value. It is, however, the home of several prestigious estates, such as Leoville-Las-Cases.

  • Château Gloria Red Bordeaux Blend St. Julien 1978

Brick red with a sienna rim. Dusty earth and dried leaves on the nose with notes of lavender and rose petal. On the palate, red currant, cranberry, dried herbs, cedar and some tobacco leaf. Good fruit flavors remain, but it is beginning its decline. Drink now. Nice wine. Interesting how well it's hung on.4/14/12 Read More

A phantastic wine in its good age of drinking. You could save this or just drink it I guess. Like the Cos d'estornel a liquid silver feeling down the throat. Read More

  • Château Leoville Barton St. Julien 2008

Shallow and tight on the nose with fine base of gravelly minerality and slow to blossom red fruits that show a seductive freshness. Lean and crisp on entry, this is balanced and elegant with lovely mineral and licorice notes accenting the core black cherry and currant fruit. With air this smoothens out a bit but remains a bit stern at its core. ... Read More

  • 2 Cases of Château Gruaud Larose Dp 1981

I found this 30-year old wine to be surprisingly good, much better than expected, even for a wine that has been kept in a temperature-controlled environment. The earthy tones prevailed, but there was still enough fruit to make it compelling and delicious. Went very well with the food (osso buco). Read More

  • 2 Cases of Château Gruaud Larose Dp 1981

Was absolutely amazed that this no-spring-chicken of a Bordeaux still tasted so youthful! Like the Rolling Stones of wine, it still puts on quite a show. The fruit is still very prominent, with some mossy earth. Interesting spices like ginger and cardamom too. A lot going on and stayed alive in the glass for quite some time. A pleasant surprise,...
